5 Korean stars who gained weight for TV and film roles

Some actors did end up going from colleagues to real-life lovers. Everyone knows about former “Song-Song” couple, Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki, while Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, or “BinJin”, are currently surrounded by potential marriage rumours. But here’s a look at nine more pairs of lovebirds who hit it off and tied the knot in real life.

Singer-actress Kim So-yeon met her husband Lee Sang-woo on the set of MBC’s weekend drama Happy Home (2016), where they played a couple fighting against the odds for love after remarrying.

AllKPop reported that in one of the episodes of KBS 2TV’s Happy Together 4, Kim confessed that the pair started to have romantic feelings for each other while shooting the drama, but did not officially become a couple until filming wrapped up.

Kim also fondly shared that the two of them used to have secret 15-hour dates, which she described as “more physically demanding than filming the drama”.

“I hunched to not get caught, and I thought I didn’t get caught, but it turns out people just pretended like they didn’t see us,” said Kim, according to AllKpop.

The couple married in a private ceremony in June 2017.

The couple turned their on-screen romance into a real-life love affair after they were paired for the drama Two Weeks (2013), where they acted alongside each other as engaged lovers. The two fell for each other on set and soon afterwards, their relationship was confirmed by Ryu Soo-young’s agency Will Entertainment, according to Soompi.

According to Channel Korea, Ryu – known for his roles in TV series Ojakgyo Family and My Princess – proposed to the actress during a hike to Namsan, a peak in South Korea. They got married in a private ceremony in January 2017 and welcomed their first child in the same year.

Cha Ye-ryun and Joo Sang-wook were co-stars in the 2015 MBC Drama Glamorous Temptation. Some might consider it fate that their first scene together involved a heart-stirring kissing scene with Cha in a wedding dress and Joo in a tuxedo. As it turns out, their on-screen romantic feelings translated into the real thing, and they tied the knot in 2017.

As reported by Soompi, during a guest appearance on SBS’ Ugly Duckling, the model-actress spoke affectionately about her husband, saying, “He’s the same now as when we were dating. We contact each other about 20-30 times a day.”

The pair met while filming the 2013 TV series A Hundred Year Legacy, where they played rivals who ended up marrying each other, Hancinema reports. With their chemistry radiating off the screen, rumours of a blossoming romance had everyone buzzing. Towards the end of the drama, they revealed their IRL couple status.

They tied the knot in 2014 and Shim gave birth to their daughter in June of the same year. In 2017, the couple had their second child.

According to KDrama Stars, Choi proposed to Shim with a ring and a handwritten letter.

In and So have been married for seven years and now have two children together. But before they embarked on their love story, the two spent a decade as friends and even went to the same school.

In their appearance on SBS’s Master in the House, Hyun confessed that they were close friends to the point where they would openly discuss their dating lives. Before deciding to get married, they starred together as couples in the dramas Aeja’s Older Sister, Minja in 2008 and Happy Ending in 2012.

As revealed by Soompi, their relationship jumped from platonic to romantic when So suddenly proposed to her at a restaurant with, soju. The next thing they knew, they were saying their vows.

Since their marriage in 2014, the two have appeared together on SBS entertainment programme Same Bed Different Dreams 2: You Are My Destiny, where they discussed their everyday life as a married couple.

Lee Bo-young and Ji Sung

Rather than acting together as main leads, Lee Bo-young and Ji Sung (born Kwak Tae-geun) are a rare case of the leading man falling for the second female lead in real life. The two met on the set of the 2004 series Save the Last Dance for Me, but it took a while for their romance to kick off. According to SBS News, after the filming of the drama, Ji enlisted in the military to serve his mandatory duty. But as they say, the heart wants what it wants, so Ji gave the beauty queen-turned-actress a call.

“A while after Ji Sung enlisted in the army, he called and asked to meet up when he had a day off. I went out to see him, as I thought he didn’t have any friends to hang out with. We drank a lot then,” the actress told SBS News.

The couple confirmed that they were dating in 2007, and got married in 2013 after being together for about six years. Ji reportedly proposed to Lee in Spain. They now have a son and a daughter.

During Lee’s recent filming Netflix’s Mine, Ji showed off major #husbandgoals with a heartwarming gesture for his wife – sending a food truck to her shoot location, according to media reports.

Eugene, former member of girl group S.E.S., and K-drama actor Ki Tae-yong shared a connection that far outlasted 2009 TV series Creating Destiny. Maybe it was the kissing scenes that ignited a spark between them, or maybe it was indeed “destiny”, because the idol-turned-actress married her leading man in July 2011.

As reported by Soompi, in his interview on the January episode of Life Bar, Ki revealed that when they were filming for the drama, the two of them were not really interested in one another, and had never considered marrying another celebrity. But years later, he proposed to Eugene with candles and roses in the house that they would live in together as a married couple. They now have two children.

In 2017, the couple and their daughter appeared on the KBS variety show The Return of Superman.

Despite their nine-year age gap, actor Lee Chun-hee and actress Jeon Hye-jin started dating soon after filming of Smile, You (2009) ended, where they played a couple who gradually developed feelings for each other.

In a real-life fairy tale moment, Lee proposed to Jeon while serenading her on stage during solo K-pop artist My-Q’s concert. According to Seoulbeats, he started singing When Midnight Comes, then reportedly pulled out a ring and proposed on the spot.

The celebrity couple married in March 2011 and had their first daughter together the same year. In 2018, they co-starred in JTBC2’s time-slip drama Never Before Existing Day, May 32 (literal translation).

Han Ga-in and Yeon Jung-hoon

The duo headlined the drama Yellow Handkerchief in 2003. Given their obvious rapport, their relationship quickly turned romantic. They began dating in the same year, got married in April 2005, and had their first child in 2016.

According to KPop Hit, Yeon – who had been acting for more than two decades – admitted during an appearance on 2 Days & 1 Night that he fell in love with his now-wife when they were still filming the drama.

Describing the moment he realised his feelings, the singer-actor said, “She was shining even more brightly than usual. She looked so pretty. I completely fell for her then.”
