Most recently, a piece of hers came under fire by Chinese state media and netizens alike for its portrayal of Asian women. The photo was originally displayed at the Lady Dior exhibition at the West Bund Art Centre in Shanghai, which is running until November 23 – but the brand eventually removed it.

The 41-year-old has been professionally honing her craft for almost 18 years. She graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, one of China’s most prestigious art schools. At the age of 23, she began creating covers for the Chinese art magazine Vision. Since then, her distinct style has taken the fashion industry by storm. She has landed covers for famous magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, as well as working with high fashion brands like Dior.

Chen’s work has also been exhibited worldwide in places like Paris, London, Los Angeles and Tokyo, and she has even photographed numerous celebrities, from Fan Bingbing to David Beckham.

Her art provokes strong opinions

Chen’s artistic style, which blends photography with Photoshop and 3D Max, has sparked criticism from traditionalists.

Most recently, the photographer’s work at the Lady Dior exhibition held at the West Bund Art Centre in Shanghai faced controversy in China. The photo in question was accused of “smearing Asian women”, according to state media. An article in China Women’s News said the image showed “spooky eyes, gloomy face and Qing dynasty-styled nail armour”.

While many social media users also suggested that the photo contributed to stereotypes about Asian women, others praised Chen’s choice of showing a darker skinned and freckled model who defies typical beauty standards in China.

Dior ended up removing the controversial photo from the exhibition.

Chen’s philosophy about art and beauty

Chen often uses technological tools in her photography and has even expressed an interest in artificial intelligence.

In an article for CNN Style, the talented photographer wrote the following: “This relationship between technology and aesthetics is like that of science and philosophy – in an ideal world, the two walk side by side. Achieving such a balance requires artists to master both, combining art and skill in the process.”

In the same article, she noted that the definition of beauty changes over time as society develops, and that the internet and social media have made fashion more global and accessible.

“I hope people become better at communicating with their hearts. I hope we focus more on content, not format. I hope that we can all learn from the traditional Chinese values that keep life and nature in harmony. We need to find balance in diversity, like a symphony,” Chen wrote in CNN Style.
