Walking down the aisle is no simple feat, and neither is finding the perfect dress for it. The rich and famous aren’t spared this difficult task, but celebrity brides certainly have access to much more extravagance and luxury.

Here we take a look at a few wedding dresses worn by Hong Kong biggest celebrities when they said “I do”.

1. Anita Mui

Soon before tragically passing away due to cervical cancer, Canto-pop queen Anita Mui donned not one but two wedding dresses. Though the “daughter of Hong Kong”, celebrated in the recent biopic, Anita, didn’t have a groom to walk down the aisle with, she took fate into her own hands by asking close friend and fashion designer Eddie Lau Pui-kei to design two extravagant gowns for her final concert to symbolise that she was ultimately married to the stage.

Mui wore the first of the two – an intricate red and gold Chinese wedding dress – for the opening of the concert, but it was her captivating Western-style gown that fully caught her bittersweet yet earnest intent. At her last curtain call, Mui came out in the striking white dress, which featured horizontal pleating across the bust and an exceptionally long train. With her grand headpiece and a microphone in tow, Hong Kong’s darling ensured that she would not be forgotten as she bid goodbye to her fans.

2. Gillian Chung

When Hong Kong singer-actress Gillian Chung got hitched in 2018, she made a slight departure from her good-girl image by choosing a plunging Jenny Packham ball gown that combined both boldness and sophistication for her Los Angeles reception. Her dress’ deep-V chiffon collar was framed by ruffled sleeves, while the flocked tulle offered an element of visual interest.

Though her marriage to cosmetologist Michael Lai may have lasted only two years, her dress lives on as a prime example of combining contemporary trends with a classic A-line silhouette.

3. Shu Qi

Shu Qi may be regarded as a famous and prolific actress in Hong Kong and Taiwan, but that didn’t stop her from opting for a simple and affordable white dress from H&M for her wedding photo shoot. Instead of tapping into the glamour of traditional weddings, she brought attention to sustainability and the elegance of simplicity with her understated dress, a pick from the brand’s Conscious Exclusive collection. With a T-shirt top and tiered lace layers for the skirt, Shu’s dress had an endearing sense of playfulness, which the couple embraced.

4. Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg

Former Danish princess and Hong Kong-raised Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg (previously known as Alexandra Manley) first met Prince Joachim of Denmark at a private dinner in January 1994. When they married in November 1995, Alexandra wore a high-collared, sleeved gown adorned with nearly 9,000 embroidered pearls with a four-metre train. The elegant Italian silk dress was accessorised in a style fit for a royal – a diamond tiara and a voluminous veil.

Angelababy’s nuptials to actor Huang Xiaoming were well-documented for their extravagance – their Shanghai wedding cost US$31 million in total, and the wedding dress certainly spared no change.

At the lavish ceremony, Angelababy showed off a custom Dior gown made of 35 metres of ivory satin organza and 50 metres of tulle, embellished with nearly one hundred rose bouquets hand-cut from Chantilly lace. The whole dress took five months to complete and was certainly a show-stopper.
