  • While Charlene recovered from health issues in South Africa, Albert got closer with his illegitimate children, Jazmin Grace Grimaldi and Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste
  • Jazmin greeted her half-siblings, royal twins Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, on Instagram on their birthdays – and Charlene supports the blended family

Princess Charlene arrived in South Africa to support a conservation project in the region last year in May, when she had a series of health problems that left her unable to leave the country. She returned to Monaco after six months, but was admitted to a treatment facility for exhaustion, her husband said in a statement.
There has been much speculation around her condition, with some rumours suggesting the royal marriage is in trouble. It’s an allegation Prince Albert has repeatedly denied.

While she was away in South Africa, Prince Albert was in Monaco, building a stronger relationship with his children: Jazmin Grace Grimaldi, Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste, Princess Gabriella and Jacques, Hereditary Prince of Monaco. A rare picture of his children all together in 2021 has been released and points to a relationship many did not know existed between the siblings and their father. Prince Albert, who rarely speaks about his two older children from his previous relationships, is believed to have been in contact with them numerous times over the year.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Prince’s children and his growing relationship with them.

Why is the picture such a big deal?

It’s the first time a picture showing the twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, with their older half-sister Jazmin Grace Grimaldi and older half-brother Alexandre Grimaldi-Coste has been seen by the public. The image was shared by Jazmin on her Instagram page and was part of a year in review video she posted ahead of New Year’s Eve. It shows a relationship between Prince Albert’s children that many did not know existed. In particular, this year, when Princess Charlene spent so much time away from her children, the picture suggests that Prince Albert has focused on his children all getting to know each other.

Jazmin is Prince Albert’s eldest child and her mother is Tamara Rotolo, an American. Alexandre is the second eldest and his mother is Nicole Coste, a former flight attendant.

The twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, were born in 2014. Prince Jacques is two minutes younger than his sister, but he is the heir to the throne because of Monaco’s laws of succession, which favour males, and also because his parents were married at the time of his birth. Monarch rules state that no heir is recognised out of wedlock.
