With a filmography that’s already bursting at the seams, Sydney Sweeney was named one of Associated Press’ Breakthrough Entertainers for 2021, thanks to her appearances in popular shows and films like Everything Sucks, Sharp Objects, The Handmaid’s Tale, Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood and Big Time Adolescence (with the man of the hour Pete Davison), to name a few.

The 24-year-old American actress is currently in the spotlight for HBO’s Euphoria, in which she is coming back for a second season. In it, she plays Cassie Howard, with Maude Apatow – who happens to be her real-life BFF – playing her sister Lexi.

In an interview with Fashion Magazine, Sweeney mentioned that her character could have been flat, but she has added more depth to the role.

“It could have been a one-note character: she’s just the nice slut. Cassie spoke to me on a different level, so I was able to find a depth to her. I hope that the different characters I play speak to people on a deeper level, whether it’s through one decision or one moment in their on-screen lives,” Sweeney shared.

2. She lives an active life

She plays a sexy blonde cheerleader on the hit show, but her Instagram feed shows she is even more active off-screen, loving outdoor adventures like hiking, rock climbing and jumping into rock pools.

She also likes to ski and, hailing from Washington state, she calls the snow-capped mountains home. Plus her skiing skills also translate to the water.

Sweeney is also a good shot, as she proved on her Instagram.

3. She loves to drive and repair cars

A confessed car junkie – not the collecting type, but the get under-the-bonnet and get greasy type – Sweeney is currently restoring her dream car. “I recently just bought a Ford Bronco that I’m working on fixing up myself,” she said, according to PureWow. “It’s been a lot more work than I thought it was going to be. I guess I was in over my head. But I’ve been trying to learn everything and just taking one step at a time.

“I’m actually changing the transmission in the car so I basically had to take out the entire body of the car, rebuild some things and now I’m putting it all back together. And then I’ll start doing all of the interior cosmetic changes.”

Aside from showing her prowess under the car, she can handle herself in it, too. Whether it’s on a go-kart or at the Porsche Experience Centre in Los Angeles, she clearly has a need for speed.

To add to her list of accomplishments and skills, in 2020 she started her own production company called Fifty-Fifty Films.

Her first project is an adaptation of Jessica Goodman’s bestselling debut novel They Wish They Were Us. HBO Max is calling the show The Players Table, and singer Halsey stars in it alongside Sweeney.

5. She’s down-to-earth

Despite her rise to fame and 4.4 million followers on Instagram, she has a very down-to-earth skincare routine, just using hyaluronic acid after washing her face.

Far from being born to be a star, Sweeney once shared in an interview with Build Series how she grew up in a small town near Spokane and when she saw a movie being filmed there, she expressed an interest in acting to her parents.

“I created a five-year business plan that basically explained what could happen in my life if they let me do this: the steps I had to take, things I had to work toward,” Sweeney said. She was 12 years old at the time, her parents allowed her to audition and she bagged the role. Looks like a decision that no one will ever regret.
