Over the years we’ve seen famous couples who have been solid since day one, and others who have had to go through a few rough patches – even separations – before finding their way back to each other again.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, we take a look back at the Hong Kong celebrity couples whose love has survived against the odds.

1. Nicholas Tse and Faye Wong

The news that Nicholas Tse and Faye Wong were dating first broke in 2000 when they held hands in front of reporters while leaving Tony Leung’s celebration party for winning Cannes best actor.

The pair went their separate ways in 2002, with Tse reigniting his romance with Cecilia Cheung and Wong going on to date Li Yapeng. Both eventually married and had kids with their other partners, but divorced them in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Tse and Wong got back together in 2014, but this time seem to have decided to keep their relationship out of the limelight, making it hard to know how things are going. Nevertheless, a reported sighting of the pair at Haneda airport in Tokyo recently got fans excited that the pair are still going strong.

2. Andy Hui and Sammi Cheng

According to Cosmopolitan, Sammi Cheng met Andy Hui at the age of just 16 as both of them were signed to record company Capital Artists. When their duet Do You Really Have Me in Your Heart? became a hit in 1991, it seems the pair had already become an item, despite never officially admitting it.

They broke up in 2004. Hui dated other women while Cheng reportedly remained single before the pair reunited in 2011, and this time they didn’t mind publicly announcing the good news. In 2015, it was reported that they had tied the knot two years prior.

Things appeared to go well for several years until Hui was caught on camera kissing TVB actress Jacqueline Wong in a taxi in 2019. After a very public apology, the couple still appear to be going strong three years after the incident.

3. Joe Nieh and Vivian Chow

Singer-songwriter Vivian Chow and writer Joe Nieh co-hosted RTHK TV youth programme Modern Era together in 1989 and dated in secret until 1992 before breaking up, according to Elle Hong Kong.

The pair reunited in 1997. Yet, in 2008, Nieh was seen kissing a university student while out clubbing, and Chow released a statement afterwards saying they had broken up. Then, in a shock twist two weeks later, the pair dramatically announced they would be tying the knot. While many of Chow’s fans were sceptical at the time, the pair remain happily married today.

4. Jacky Cheung and May Lo

“God of Song” Jacky Cheung and former actress May Lo Mei-mei met as co-stars on Devoted to You in 1986 and began dating privately. The two broke up in 1988 during a lull in Cheung’s career, then got back together when he regained his popularity as one of the “Four Heavenly Kings of Canto-pop”.
Since the early 90s, Lo has taken a step back from acting, and the pair got married in London, in 1996. They now live in Repulse Bay and have two daughters named Zoe and Zia.
