The Korean queen of melodrama is back! Last year, Son Ye-jin revealed that she will return to the small screen in Netflix’s Thirty-Nine . The 12-episode series tells the story of three friends who are about to turn 40 and is slated to release on February 16. Son skyrocketed to global fame after playing a chaebol heiress in Crash Landing on You . In Thirty-Nine , she will play Cha Mi-jo, the wealthy head dermatologist at a posh clinic to the rich and famous in Gangnam. According to Soompi, Son chose to join the series because she “liked the script that sufficiently expressed life, existence, death, love and the joys and sorrows of life”. The star – 40 years old herself – is often praised for her acting prowess as well as her age-defying beauty, so it seems like a match made in heaven for her to play a gorgeous dermatologist in the upcoming series. With this in mind, we can’t help but wonder how the Nation’s First Love managed to maintain her timeless classic beauty. Here are six of her secrets … 17 exciting new K-dramas to watch on Netflix in 2022 1. Sheet masks for oily skin and aloe vera for sunburn Sheet masks are a known beauty staple in South Korea, and it’s no different for Son. During an interview with Her World in 2020, the Korean star revealed that because of her oily skin, she can’t use beauty products with too many ingredients and often opts for hydrating facial products when her skin becomes too dry while travelling. “Facial masks are one of my must-brings when I go overseas,” she said. “I also bring natural aloe vera – I grind it myself to apply on my skin for sunburn.” She also said that she used face masks only once or twice a week before, but now she tries to use them on a daily basis. 2. No complex skincare routines Despite complicated skincare routines being popular in K-beauty, the April Snow actress keeps it simple. “It’s impossible to do 10 steps [laughs]. I think it depends on the person’s skin type,” she said in the same interview with Her World, adding that she prefers something minimal that only involves one or two steps. BigBang’s big comeback: everything we know about the 2022 reunion 3. Her mum’s cucumber eye mask is a must Did you know that Son picked up an age-old remedy from her mother when she was young? The Valentino brand ambassador told Malay Mail that her mum would refrigerate slices of fresh cucumbers, then place them over her eyes to soothe and calm the skin. “There were not a lot of cosmetic products back then,” she said, further adding, “I have followed in her footsteps – I still use cucumbers today.” 4. The importance of cleansing Another must for oily skin that Son learned about is the importance of cleansing. “I heard it’s not good to cleanse your face in the morning, so I usually just wash my face with water. But over time, I learnt that I have oily skin, so now I cleanse my face every morning and night no matter how busy I am,” she told Female Magazine in 2017. The Baeksang Award winner uses a steam towel for facial cleansing to open the pores followed by an exfoliating cleanser. She then rinses her face with lemon water to help the pores contract. Hyuna and Dawn are engaged! Inside the idols’ rule-breaking relationship 5. Don’t try and test every product While there are many beauty products in the market today, Son is very careful when it comes to choosing the one that fits her best, as she believes not every product will work for your skin. “I believe there’s no one product that fits everyone or serves their skin concerns and purposes,” she said, according to The Singapore Women’s Weekly. “So I’ll decide which products to use depending on my skin concerns, whether it’s feeling sensitive or dry.” 6. Say yes to sunscreen! Perhaps the most crucial step that many of us miss is to apply sunscreen at the end of our skincare routine. “When I’m out, I always ensure that I apply sunscreen and a bit of BB cream or foundation because it helps to protect your skin from dust particles and the UV rays from the sun,” she said, according to Singapore’s Female magazine.
