American rapper and 15-time Grammy winner Eminem performed his 2002 Oscar-winning hit Lose Yourself at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show, then ended by taking a knee – a move that, according to sources such as CBS News, was to show his support of quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick, who used the gesture himself in 2016 to bring attention to the issue of police brutality and racial injustice.

2. The real Slim Shady

As millennials watching realised they still knew the lyrics to Lose Yourself by heart, many will have Googled Eminem and his reference to “mum’s spaghetti”.

The rapper’s career peaked in the late 1990s and through the 2000s as he introduced his alter ego “Slim Shady”, churning out one hit after another, making him one of the world’s most successful and influential rappers. Coming from a rough background, he turned his life around and made himself a legendary musician.

He remains active to this day, and his website Eminem.com continues to sell his music and merchandise, including apparel and collectibles.

3. He is worth US$230 million

Eminem has amassed a net worth of US$230 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, largely due to his success as a musician. His multiple studio albums earned him up to US$30-50 million a year when he toured on top.

The bestselling artist reportedly spends his cash on business investments, including properties – and rare comic books. A comic book geek, he spends sums building his extensive collection, which includes Marvel and DC comic books, and a rare Amazing Fantasy #15 from 1962, which is said to cost US$1 million, according to TheThings.

4. His business ventures and multimillion-dollar properties

He opened the Mom’s Spaghetti restaurant opened in 2017. He’s also built his own recording company, called Shady Records, together with his manager Paul Rosenberg. It’s produced its fair share of successful artists such as 50 Cent.

More than a decade ago, Eminem also bought himself two Michigan mansions worth millions each. According to TheThings, his home in Rochester Hills was worth US$4.75 million in 2003, with 22 rooms spread over a huge 17,500 sq ft of living space but in 2017, the rapper sold the mansion for under US$2 million. 5. He started the The Marshall Mathers Foundation in 2002

The foundation is “a charitable organisation dedicated to providing help to disadvantaged and at-risk youth primarily in Detroit, Michigan and its surrounding communities”, it says on his website. As per TheThings, the foundation is said to have supported multiple causes and recently, has provided free Mom’s Spaghetti meals to health care workers in the pandemic as well as raised US$3 million to assist victims of the Manchester attack in 2017.

Last but not least, the rapper’s great wealth has allowed him to build happy lives for his three daughters, Hailie Scott, Alaina Marie, and Stevie and Whitney Scott, the latter two legally adopted. Long-time Eminem fans will recognise his daughters’ names as they are all mentioned in the rapper’s lyrics.
