Since leaving the White House, former first lady Melania Trump has kept a relatively low profile and largely remained scandal-free. But that all changed this week with a series of headlines that have raised eyebrows.

So what has she been up to and why is she being investigated? Here’s everything you need to know.

1. The charity scandal

A charity event hosted by Melania is being investigated after organisers said a portion of ticket proceeds would go to a charity that doesn’t appear to exist, The New York Times reported.

Melania is due to appear at a “high tea” event in April in Naples, Florida, which organisers say will “benefit Fostering the Future, a Be Best initiative”, which gives computer science scholarships to those who have come through the foster care system.

Regular tickets cost US$3,000 and limited VIP tickets cost US$50,000 each. It’s unclear what percentage of the proceeds will go to charity.

Florida charity laws require any organisations soliciting donations in the state to be registered. According to The New York Times, no charity with the name “Fostering the Future” or “Be Best” is registered there.

The Florida agency that oversees charitable fundraising confirmed that they could not find evidence that the charity was registered in the state and had opened an inquiry into the event.

Melania declined to comment to The New York Times, but later tweeted: “Everything has been done lawfully and all documents are in the works.”

“We are working with Bradley Impact Fund, a donor-advised fund, to select charities that will receive the donations to foster children,” she continued.

The revelations about Melania’s charity event were published in an extensive The New York Times article that details how Donald and his family profited from his political fame.

Whip Fundraising, the company organising Melania’s “high tea” event, has previously arranged other events for the Trumps, including Donald’s Christmas party last year in Naples, Florida, which cost US$10,000 per ticket.

The Trumps’ long-time accountants have suddenly severed all ties with the former president and his business – quitting even though they are in the midst of preparing Donald and Melania’s tax returns.

In a letter made public on February 14 by New York attorney general Letitia James, the accounting firm, Mazars USA, told The Trump Organisation’s top corporate lawyer that it has stepped away from Trump and his business due to questions about the reliability of key company financial statements.

News of Mazar USA’s stunning move surfaced in papers filed by James as part of New York prosecutors’ ongoing probe into possible banking, insurance and tax fraud on the part of Trump and his business.

In its February 9 letter, Mazars said there were only a few tax returns that remained to be filed, including those of Melania. Those returns, which were due on February 15, have been held up by a lack of information.

3. Like Donald, Melania is moving away from traditional social media

Melania will use Parler for exclusive communications and make the platform her “social media home”, the company said on February 9.

Parler, a social media service popular with the right-wing in the US, also spearheaded the launch of her non-fungible token (NFT) and blockchain technology venture in December.

The site had gone dark for weeks early last year after major service providers cut it off for failing to police violent content that led to the attack on the US Capitol.

Donald, who was barred from Twitter and Facebook following the incident, is also looking to launch his own social media app called Truth Social that he said would “stand up to Big Tech” companies.

The Parler app was launched in 2018 as a social media site for those seeking an alternative to major platforms including Twitter. It has over 16 million users.
