The battle for Chateau Miraval is far from over, as the world learned over the weekend. It’s official – Brad Pitt is suing ex-wife Angelina Jolie for selling her shares of the French estate to the Stoli Group, a Luxembourg-based spirits manufacturer manned by a Russian oligarch named Yuri Shefler. The Hollywood power couple bought the estate in 2008 for an estimated 25 million euros (US$28.3 million). According to the lawsuit, both parties had agreed not to sell their interests in the property, the venue for their gorgeous destination wedding in 2014. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 and told her ex-husband that she sold to Shefler in January 2021. Aside from a vineyard, Miraval also includes several structures that date back to the 17th century, such as the Romanesque chapel where the two A-listers married, a pine forest, a lake, olive groves and a moat. The towering main house consists of 35 rooms and is fitted with a spa, gym, a home theatre, indoor and outdoor pools and even a helicopter pad. The estate is run through a partnership with Famille Perrine, which manages the terroir service and the farming of produce, as well as the distribution of Miraval wines. The grounds are home to thousands of oak trees that foster the growth of truffles, hundreds of beehives that produce honey and 3,000 olive trees that create an abundance of olive oil. There’s an allotted 60 hectares (150 acres) just for growing grapes of the Cinsault-Grenache-Syrah blend. It was formerly owned by Jacques Loussier, but long before that, it was home to French nobility The estate was once home to nobility, when in the 15th century it served as the private residence of the Orsini Prince of Naples when he joined the French court. It was in the possession of the Orsini family for the next four centuries. Before that, it was host to monastic practices in the 13th century. The estate was first used as a winery in the 1850s, an initiative led by its then-owner Joseph-Louis Lombot who built the main cellar. In the late 1970s, Jacques Loussier took ownership of the property and maintained the wine production.
