Tacoma-born UFC fighter Miesha Tate made headlines again when she emerged as the winner of Celebrity Big Brother season three.

As a professional mixed martial artist, Tate has won numerous times throughout an impressive career, earning important titles such as the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion and becoming UFC women’s champion six times.

Besides all of her sports accolades, Tate is also an inspiring woman with a full life outside the octagon. Here are some fun facts about her …

1. She is nicknamed “Cupcake”

While her nickname “Cupcake” stemmed from Tate’s love for cupcakes and baking in general, it is also a way for her to defy stereotypes.

According to UFC, Tate said that despite her feminine and sweet look, she is strong and unstoppable on the inside as she warned, “This cupcake can hurt you.”

2. She started wrestling boys in high school

When Tate was in high school, she joined the wrestling team at a friend’s encouragement, according to Bleacher Report – before the school even had an official female wrestling team. Her presence in the team wasn’t welcomed at first by the boys who were astonished at the participation of a girl in a sport typically associated with men.

However, as Tate was determined to get better at wrestling, she inspired many other girls in Washington state and, eventually, she won the girls’ state championship in her fourth year.

Tate has regularly been spotted having a good time with her parents. For instance, she posted a photo of herself and her mum doing birthday shots on her Instagram, commenting on their special bond of sharing the same birthday. She was also seen cheering for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks with her dad.

After breaking up with her ex-boyfriend Bryan Caraway, Tate announced her relationship with MMA fighter Johnny Nuñez in 2018. The couple welcomed their first child, daughter Amaia Nevaeh, in 2018, and Tate was reportedly in labour for a gruelling 67 hours, according to Yahoo! Life.

 

She gave birth to her second child, son Daxton Wylder, in 2020 at home with the help of her partner.

Tate cited her children as one of the motivations for her recent return to fighting, reported BJPenn.com, since she wanted to make them proud and become their role model.

5. She has just come back from a five-year hiatus

In 2016, after losing to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205, Tate announced her retirement from the sport, acknowledging that her time might have been over. During her absence from mixed martial arts, Tate explored other career opportunities, assuming the vice-president position for the Singapore-based One Championship in 2018.

But after a five-year hiatus, she decided to return to fighting one more time for the “second surge” in her career in January this year, reported MMA Fighting. She declared that the decision was not based on financial necessity, but on personal choice to satisfy her thirst for fighting and to fulfil unfinished business.

Throughout her life, Tate has carried out various acts of kindness, showing her compassion and strength. Her ex-boyfriend Caraway praised Tate for saving his mother’s life when she suffered a near-death incident occurring during a scuba diving trip, reported USA Today.

Tate also once helped carry a six-year-old girl with a broken arm down a hiking trail to obtain medical care, reported The Washington Post.

As a pioneer of women in mixed martial arts, Tate has also shattered the glass ceiling and motivated women around the globe to gain self-confidence and step out of their comfort zones.

She was named one of the most beautiful athletes in mixed martial arts by Fitness Gurls Magazine, which featured her on its cover in the December 2013 edition. She also posed for nude photos for ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue in 2013.

As reported by Celebrity Net Worth, Tate’s net worth is around US$6 million. Her earnings mainly came from pay per view money, prize money, bonus earnings and sponsorship for her fights. During her retirement, she also earned a six-figure salary from her job with One Championship.
