Sorokin ended up back in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after just six weeks of freedom because she’d overstayed her visa. Now she faces deportation back to Germany from the US, pending her appeal. She tweeted last year that she’ll only agree to “go back to Europe when they give black people reparations”.

She used her Netflix money to pay some outstanding bills, but still owes a lot

Despite her crimes, Sorokin’s fame has given her a surprising amount of leverage. Court documents show Netflix paid Sorokin US$320,000 for the rights to her story. She reportedly used US$199,000 of the Netflix money to pay back banks, including US$70,000 to Citibank, and another US$24,000 for state fines.

She’s officially broke now

This week, Sorokin finally claimed she is broke. The fake heiress has been granted “poor person’s relief” in filing her appeal against her conviction for grand larceny and theft, court documents reveal. The relief was granted to help cover fees related to her appeal and other legal costs.

To have been granted the relief, the 31-year-old would have had to formally prove she had little or no money, detailing any assets she has including property, income, expenses, stocks, bonds and details of bank accounts. The court ruled that Sorokin was “permitted to dispense with payment of the required fee for the subpoena and filing of the record”, according to the Daily Mail.

At this stage, Sorokin still has her own private lawyer, but reportedly requested help with the administrative fees involved.

She’ll probably leverage her new Netflix fame to stay in the US

Nevertheless, back in August 2021, lawyer Audrey Thomas argued that Sorokin should be able to remain in the US despite overstaying her visa, for the opposite reason.

He argued that Sorokin would “not be a burden to the State as she has very lucrative contracts with Netflix and other well established media groups”.

Thomas stated in various court documents: “She will be self-sustaining for the entirety of her presence in the USA. She has a place to live and means of providing for herself and her business ventures will actually provide jobs for Americans.

“Ms Sorokin has already provided for several people’s financial security. She has paid out over US$75,000 in legal fees, and has hired camera men/women, videographers, photographers, and a team of American media personnel.”

He added: “Ms Anna Sorokin is truly a force of change that Americans can believe in, and a source of inspiration for those who have fallen to believe they can get back up again.”

If there is one thing we know about Sorokin, it’s that she knows how to take advantage of a lucrative opportunity. And that doesn’t exclude the pandemic.

Sorokin is currently one of several detainees in the US suing federal immigration authorities for refusing to give her Covid-19 booster shots while being kept in prison, and claims she tested positive for the virus in January.
