In 2015, Forbes listed Elizabeth Holmes’ net worth at US$4.5 billion. But that all crumbled when it re-evaluated its estimation of her wealth after The Wall Street Journal published an article that poked holes into the capabilities of Theranos, the blood testing company Holmes founded. In 2016, after federal agencies confirmed Theranos and Holmes were under investigation, Forbes revised the disgraced businesswoman’s net worth to zero. In January this year, she was found guilty on four counts of fraud, and convicted.

But a year after the investigation first began, in 2017, she met hotel heir Billy Evans at a party. Their relationship grew strong quickly and by 2019, they were engaged. CNBC reported that Holmes gave birth in July 2021, delaying the start of her trial.

In 2019, many were shocked at how Holmes and Evans were walking around as “happy as can be”, per Cosmopolitan. Not because they didn’t seem suited to each other, but because Holmes knew she was going to be on trial and could face 20 years behind bars.

His family did not approve

The New York Post reported that Evans’ family did not initially approve of the relationship. Evans’ parents, William and Susan, were very surprised to hear about his decision to marry the woman behind Theranos. A source told the publication that the family thought he had been “brainwashed”, while his friends “sat him down” to have a talk.

His friends were concerned about both the relationship and the impact the then impending trial could have, telling Evans he was not prepared for the onslaught of publicity.
