In 2015, Forbes listed Elizabeth Holmes’ net worth at US$4.5 billion. But that all crumbled when it re-evaluated its estimation of her wealth after The Wall Street Journal published an article that poked holes into the capabilities of Theranos, the blood testing company Holmes founded. In 2016, after federal agencies confirmed Theranos and Holmes were under investigation, Forbes revised the disgraced businesswoman’s net worth to zero. In January this year, she was found guilty on four counts of fraud, and convicted.

But a year after the investigation first began, in 2017, she met hotel heir Billy Evans at a party. Their relationship grew strong quickly and by 2019, they were engaged. CNBC reported that Holmes gave birth in July 2021, delaying the start of her trial.

In 2019, many were shocked at how Holmes and Evans were walking around as “happy as can be”, per Cosmopolitan. Not because they didn’t seem suited to each other, but because Holmes knew she was going to be on trial and could face 20 years behind bars.

The New York Post reported that Evans’ family did not initially approve of the relationship. Evans’ parents, William and Susan, were very surprised to hear about his decision to marry the woman behind Theranos. A source told the publication that the family thought he had been “brainwashed”, while his friends “sat him down” to have a talk.

His friends were concerned about both the relationship and the impact the then impending trial could have, telling Evans he was not prepared for the onslaught of publicity.

A playboy turned dad

The New York Post reported that, before meeting Holmes, Evans would only date Instagram models. After the two connected, Evans told friends that Holmes was different to what he had read about her.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Evans worked at Luminar Technologies at the time he started dating Holmes as a manager of special projects. According to colleagues, their relationship made people uncomfortable because Holmes would always pop in and the couple would end up at chatting to the boss, per The New York Post. Luminar Technologies later denied the claims.

Holmes’ net worth may be currently valued at zero, but she certainly doesn’t seem to be living a humble life. She has been staying with Evans, who comes from a wealthy family that founded the Evans Hotel Group, a hotel chain in Southern California.

According to CNBC, the couple are living together at a US$135 million estate in Woodside, California. The location of their home was made public after Evans received a traffic fine for failure to display a number plate.

He listed Green Gables as his home, which is one of the richest areas in Silicon Valley. The estate has previously been the location of choice for politicians, royalty and Hollywood stars. Numerous reports put Evans’ net worth at around US$10 million. It may not be in the billion-dollar range like Holmes is used to, but it does ensure she can still live a privileged life.
