Baby number 7! Who are Elon Musk’s children and what do we know about them? Secretly welcoming his latest child with Grimes, the Tesla founder believes it’s his moral duty to father more kids
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal at the end of 2021, Elon Musk spoke of his concern for a world where “there are not enough people”, saying he feared that “civilisation is going to crumble” as a result. His answer? Encourage people to have more babies.
In yet another twist, Grimes tweeted on March 11 that the pair had broken up again, but still called him her “best friend and the love of my life”. Does that mean the pair could yet come good on their plan to have “at least three or four children” together? At this point, who knows.
But while we await a possible Grimes-Musk baby No 3, let’s take a look at the entire Musk brood to date.

Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, four months old
Newborn baby Exa is Musk’s first daughter. Born via surrogate in December 2021, she’s also being dubbed “Y” inside the family as her older brother, X Æ A-12, goes by “X”.
The name Exa reportedly refers to the term ExaFlops, which is the “ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second”, Grimes explained to Vanity Fair. Meanwhile, her middle name Dark encapsulates “the beautiful mystery of our universe” while Sideræl is just another way of saying “sidereal”, Grimes added, meaning the “true time of the universe, star time, deep space time” and “not our relative Earth time”.

After the couple semi-separated last September, they were still living together and co-parenting X, according to Page Six. The world’s richest man also fed X and changed his nappies, just like any father.
“Well, babies are just eating and pooping machines, you know? Right now there’s not much I can do. When the kid gets older, there will be more of a role for me,” he told The New York Times.
But despite his young age, it seems that Musk already has designs on X becoming Tesla and SpaceX’s future CEO by allowing him to “attend” a business meeting (from his father’s lap) while Musk talked rockets, as reported in The Independent, and even doing press tours with him (like the on screen interview with Time’s editor in chief for Person of the Year).
Twins Xavier and Griffin, 17, and triplets Damian, Saxon and Kai, 16
After getting married to his first wife, Canadian writer Justine Wilson, Musk welcomed his first son, Nevada, in 2002. Tragically, the boy died from sudden infant death syndrome just 10 weeks later, and the couple were left devastated.
After doing IVF, Wilson was able to give birth to twins Griffin and Xavier in April 2004, and then triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian in January 2006. Custody of all five boys has been split between the pair since they divorced in 2008.

“Custody of our five children is split evenly. Almost all of my non-work waking hours are spent with my boys, and they are the love of my life,” he told Business Insider back in 2010.
Besides taking them to Disney World or going camping, he also travels with them often, according to an interview he gave to The New York Times. “If I have a trip for Tesla to China, for example, I’ll bring the kids with me and we’ll go see the Great Wall or we take the bullet train from Beijing to Xian and see the Terracotta Warriors.”
Musk has even founded a school for them called Ad Astra, meaning “to the stars” in Latin. The school was started in 2014 for the boys and the children of other SpaceX employees because the entrepreneur didn’t approve of regular school, according to The Washington Post. Focusing on teaching skills to children, it eschews giving students grades and offers subjects like robotics, nuclear politics and AI. Apparently no languages are taught at Ad Astra because Musk believes computer-assisted language translation will be soon widely available.
- Grimes recently tweeted that the pair had broken up again, four months after they welcomed daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, but she still called him the ‘love of her life’
- Musk and Grimes previously said they’d planned to have up to four children together, which would bring his total number of kids to 10
