Titanic actress Gloria Stuart held the crown for most valuable jewellery at the Oscars for more than 20 years, after she wore a US$20 million 15-carat blue diamond necklace from Harry Winston – just like the one in the film – in 1998. In terms of dresses, Nicole Kidman’s US$2 million haute couture gown by John Galliano for Christian Dior from the 1997 ceremony topped the list, but not for nearly as long. Here are the priciest ensembles worn at the Oscars … 1. Lady Gaga – US$30 million In 2019, Lady Gaga wore jewellery worth over US$30 million from Tiffany & Co. The whopping 128 carat yellow diamond was last worn by Breakfast at Tiffany’s actress Audrey Hepburn during a press tour for the film in 1961. Gaga paired it with a relatively inexpensive down from Brandon Maxwell costing US$6,495. Meanwhile, the singer’s 90 carat diamond Lorraine Schwartz earrings worn at the 2016 ceremony were worth US$8 million. Inside Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston’s friendship – and secret love 2. Cate Blanchett – US$18.1 million The Australian actress rocked up to the 2014 Academy Awards in a US$100,000 beige Armani Privé gown. While the dress itself isn’t the most expensive seen on the red carpet, Blanchett paired it with US$18 million worth of Chopard jewels. The jewellery Elizabeth Stewart styled her in included earrings with 62 opals, a diamond bracelet and ring. Blanchett wore a dress by the same fashion house (and of the same value) to the 2016 Oscars. But the designer dressed her in a showstopping piece embellished in Swarovski crystals, worth US$200,000, when she attended the awards ceremony in 2007. 3. Charlize Theron – US$15.89 million In 2014, Theron wore a US$90,000 black Dior dress with Harry Winston jewellery worth US$15.8 million. Alongside a dazzling pair of earrings, she showed off a 31 carat necklace with emerald-cut centre stone. The year before, the South African star – who has appeared in films Prometheus and Snow White and the Huntsman – arrived in a white Christian Dior dress worth US$100,000. The star’s US$4.5 million Harry Winston diamond wrist cuffs brought her ensemble price tag up into the millions. How Shark Tank billionaire Mark Cuban is changing the world 4. Anne Hathaway – US$10 million The Devil Wears Prada star did anything but blend into the red carpet when she rocked a red Valentino number worth US$80,000 in 2011. The Oceans 8 actress took the outfit to the next level by pairing it with US$10 million worth of jewellery – a 94 carat Lucida Star necklace and earrings from Tiffany & Co. 5. Jennifer Lawrence – US$4 million Remember when Jennifer Lawrence made headlines for tripping on the way to collect her best actress award at the Oscars? Well, she at least tumbled on those stairs in style as she went down in a pricey piece from Christian Dior Haute Couture – the most expensive to ever be seen on the red carpet for the Academy Awards. How Shark Tank billionaire Mark Cuban is changing the world Lawrence was the face of the brand at the time in 2013 and had signed a three-year deal worth US$15 million to represent them at events. Her gown – designed by Raf Simons – was worth double the US$2 million John Galliano for Christian Dior gown Nicole Kidman wore 16 years earlier in 1997. She paired it with shoes from Brian Atwood and Chopard jewellery – including 12 carat pear-shaped white diamond drop earrings and an eight carat diamond ring. But it was the 74 carat necklace that turned heads – including her own. Lawrence wore the piece (containing 150 diamonds) backwards so it dripped between her shoulder blades and showed off her sculpted frame. The total value of her jewellery is unknown, but the following year she wore a similar back necklace from Chopard worth US$2 million – and if Cate Blanchett’s pieces from the brand are anything to go by, the amount is jaw-dropping.
