The latest wave of Covid-19 infections in Shanghai has led to a huge impact on the metropolis. Under the zero-Covid policy, a strict lockdown was imposed while authorities handle the situation, meaning 25 million Shanghai residents have been ordered to stay home.

As many Hong Kong entertainers are moving their careers to mainland China, some of them have already relocated there for convenience’s sake. Many residents have taken their experiences to social media over the past few weeks and some of the footage has been shocking indeed. We take a look at how Hong Kong celebs have been dealing with the lockdown in Shanghai, based on their public social account postings.

1. Carina Lau

With numerous properties and investments scattered across Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and more, the semi-retired actress Carina Lau made Shanghai her permanent base in March 2021.

Recently, she posted a photo of herself on Weibo having a sample taken for her Covid-19 test in a neighbourhood outdoor testing facility.

Another recent photo shows her relaxing on a balcony during the third day of lockdown, complete with the stunning city view of Shanghai from her flat, which is said to be located in an affluent neighbourhood.

2. Gigi Lai

Splitting her time in both Hong Kong and mainland China, Lai revealed on Weibo that she’s currently in Shanghai with her whole family under the pandemic lockdown.

 

“During this period, the most precious thing is to spend more time with the family. We took this opportunity to play, chat, cook and do housework together from morning to night. It was a lot of fun. For children, it’s hard to stay indoors and can’t go out for activities. I’m so grateful,” she said in an Instagram post.

Former TVB actor Benny Chan relocated to Shanghai with his family two years ago, according to Jayne Stars.

At the beginning of the lockdown there were food shortage concerns, with netizens saying they rely on delivery apps. Meanwhile, Chan’s wife Lisa Jiang Lisha ranted on a live broadcast that they spent a whooping US$230 (RMB 1,500) to get some vegetables and eggs sent to them with an additional US$80 (RMB 500) delivery fee.

4. Rain Lee

Lee started her career in Hong Kong in the late 90s singing and appearing in romantic comedies. She’s since starred in several mainland films and drama series, but has recently shifted some focus to hosting live broadcasts to maintain her popularity during the pandemic.

While the Chans had to pay extra for groceries, Lee shared a photo of some colourful fresh vegetables supplied to her by the authorities. Perhaps the shortage situation is gradually calming down since it started.

5. Yumiko Cheng

Born in Shanghai before immigrating to Hong Kong at the age of 11, singer and actress Yumiko Cheng moved back to her hometown, and is currently there at the time of lockdown.

She’s been honing her culinary skills, a throwback to her appearance on TVB’s cooking game show Cooking Beauties, and she celebrated her daughter’s birthday at home.

6. Yvonne Yung

Former ATV Miss Asia Pageant winner Yvonne Yung has been focusing on her acting career in mainland China in recent years. Her husband and daughter were living in Taiwan until they also relocated to Shanghai at the end of last year, according to Mingpao.

Yet due to the city’s lockdown, her husband and daughter are stuck in Shanghai while she fulfils her work commitments elsewhere. She took to Weibo to express her feelings about being separated from her family and her wish for the lockdown to be over soon so that she can return home.
