Meet Mia Threapleton, co-starring with mum Kate Winslet in I Am: the British actress and self-made star calls Leonardo DiCaprio ‘uncle’ and got her first lead role in Shadows
Kate Winslet and her daughter with ex-husband Jim Threapleton will soon share the screen once more in British series I Am season three’s episode “I am Ruth”. According to IMDB, the mother-daughter duo previously starred in 2014 drama A Little Chaos together.
The episode will shed a light on the topic of online influencers and their impact on a mother-daughter relationship.
She’s always wanted to act
Threapleton recalled to Variety that she didn’t often get to see her mother working when she was growing up, and on the rare occasions she did, “it was a special treat”.

Winslet shared in a 2014 interview with SBS News that, “All I ever hope is that they [her children] find lots of things they can do that they love, because then someday they’ll settle on one of them having experienced lots of other things along the way. Whereas, for me, I just loved acting. I loved it and still feel that way.”
The Titanic actress currently has three children from different marriages. She’d always felt that her eldest one, Mia, would go on to act though, coincidently following in her mother’s esteemed footsteps. “I think I knew it was coming, I always suspected. And then a few years ago she turned around and said, ‘I’d like to give it a go’,” she told British talk show Lorraine.
And right she was – but school came first. After Threapleton was “free of exam hell”, she was excited to finally start auditioning. “I just hoped I would get the chance to do what I had wanted to do for so long!” she told Variety.
She doesn’t need her mother’s stardom to shine
Threapleton could have easily taken her mother’s surname and used her connections to enter the acting world. But instead she kept her father’s name and auditioned like any other young starlet with a Hollywood dream. In fact, the casting team didn’t know about her connection with Winslet.
“What’s been really great for her is that she has a different surname. So that initial job out of the gate, she slipped right under the radar, and the people who cast her had absolutely no idea she was my daughter and that was important for her self-esteem,” Winslet proudly told Lorraine.
She is a growing talent
Without any formal training or experience, Threapleton landed her first lead role from her first audition for Irish independent film Shadows (2020). She stars as Alma, a teenager who, together with her sister Alexa, tries to survive a catastrophe.

It was a memorable experience for her. She prepared a tape audition for Alma but she was asked to try out for the role of Alex in Dublin. However, on her way back to the airport, she was called back in to audition for Alma, as the role hadn’t been filled yet and Threapleton’s image was stuck in director Carlo Lavagna’s mind.
“She came back and we gave her a couple of pages for that very complicated scene and she nailed it perfectly,” Lavagna recalled in a YouTube interview with Galway Film Fleadh. “It was evident that she had to be the character Alma because she did an amazing casting, like when she did the part in a scene that nobody could do the way she did it.”
Threapleton will also appear in the upcoming series Dangerous Liaisons as Rose, a young prostitute with dreams of a better life, per Variety. If the name Rose rings a bell in this family’s orbit, that’s because Winslet played a character of the same name in the iconic Titanic alongside a young DiCaprio.
She has used her dyslexia to her advantage in her work
It takes some time for Threapleton to read a script due to her dyslexia. However, she found that the key was to ensure she understands and absorbs the character.

“I read the script lots of times. I mean, really loads of times, over and over, because for me that is how a story goes in and stays in. I found that the more I read it, the more I found out about Alma and the easier she was for me to understand,” she told Variety.
She loves the hard work involved in acting
In addition to the challenges of her new work and difficulties with dyslexia, Threapleton is learning more about acting as she goes – and has a veteran mother to look up to, and an Oscar-winning “uncle”. Reportedly, thanks to Winslet and DiCaprio’s real life friendship, a source told Heat Magazine that, “Leo is great with Kate’s kids – they call him Uncle Leo. It’s the perfect relationship.”
In a 2004 interview with Marie Claire, Winslet added that he “adores my children, but the problem is, he spoils them rotten!” We’re sure Threapleton can get some great acting advice from both.
“It’s a very different experience when it [acting] is happening to you, and not just something I was getting to observe from time to time,” Threapleton told Variety. “I really understand why my mum has always impressed on us how hard the work is. She is right! And I loved every second of it.”
