  • The harrowing true crime documentary about Suzanne Sevakis, whose body was found by the roadside, and her husband Franklin Floyd, has shocked audiences globally
  • Floyd’s life of crime started at 16 when he stole a gun; he also abducted and sexually assaulted a four-year-old girl, then kidnapped Sevakis and her siblings

Netflix’s true crime documentaries can be quite dark, and its latest in the genre, Girl in the Picture, has hit a particular sensitive nerve with viewers, who have called the story “horrifying and sickening”.

Based on investigative journalist Matt Birkbeck’s books, A Beautiful Child and its sequel Finding Sharon, the documentary tells the tragic life of a young woman named Tonya Hughes (real name Suzanne Sevakis) who was found dead by the side of the road in Oklahoma City in 1990. Her younger child Michael Hughes went missing, and subsequently kidnapped.

After its release on July 6, the harrowing documentary quickly captivated audiences everywhere and reopened the long-standing mystery that once shocked the nation, and now global audiences.

One user wrote, “#GirlInThePicture has me wondering how many other children in the world are currently being “raised” by their abductors? What a horrific story.”

Others pointed out America’s broken social service system and the much-debated, pro-life secularism.
