Fame and celebrity

  • Kelis made headlines for calling out Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo on Instagram for sampling her song Milkshake in ‘Renaissance’ without permission
  • She’s worked with Enrique Iglesias, Björk, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Benny Benassi, Diplo and will.i.am. during her career, and was even on The Masked Singer

Beyoncé recently released her album “Renaissance” to overwhelming fanfare. While the former Destiny’s Child star has received plenty of praise for her new music, there is at least one artist who’s voiced some critique – an accusation, to be specific – against the Crazy in Love singer.

Kelis has been making headlines for calling out Beyoncé for an alleged theft: sampling her 1999 song Get Along With You on new track Energy without prior consent.

Although the controversy has gotten Kelis back in the headlines, the award-winning singer has actually been very busy and never stopped making music since she debuted in the late 90s.

So, in addition to the recent drama, what else has Kelis been up to? We take a closer look.

The beef with Beyoncé

Taking to Instagram, the Milkshake singer made a series of posts in which she responded to fans’ comments, addressing her views on Beyoncé and producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo:

“The reality is that my real beef is not only with Beyoncé, because at the end of the day, she sampled a record. She’s copied me before, she’s done stuff before, so have many other artists, it’s fine, I don’t care about that.”

She added, “The issue is that not only are we female artists, OK? Black female artists in an industry [in which] there’s not that many of us. We’ve met each other, we know each other, we have mutual friends. It’s not hard. She can contact, right?”
