Why Selena Gomez’s life-saving ‘BFF’ has the right to be upset: Francia Raisa donated her kidney during the Disney star’s lupus battle, but didn’t get a mention in the new Apple TV+ docu, My Mind & Me

Selena Gomez just released her all new Apple TV+ documentary My Mind & Me, in which she gives her fans a realistic and brutal glimpse into the mental struggles she had to suffer over the past six years.

Though the documentary has a powerful message, the singer made the biggest headlines for a different reason: not giving a shout out to Francia Raisa, her best friend who saved her life with a kidney transplant back in 2017.

What’s more, Gomez caused a stir in the documentary when she said Taylor Swift is her only friend in the industry.

Just what happened between Gomez and Raisa and what made their great friendship fall apart?

The first meeting

Disney actress-turned-singer Gomez, 30, and How I Met Your Father actress Raisa, 34, maintained a close relationship for a long time. The girls became friends when they met each other in 2007 during a charity event.

Raisa told Latina magazine in 2013 that they saw each other at the Children’s Hospital and the two instantly clicked. Afterwards, they would often gush about each other on social media and even refer to each other as “sisters”.

The life-saving kidney transplant

In 2007, Gomez was diagnosed with the inflammatory disease Lupus and the only way to save her life was through a kidney transplant. And, like a true friend, Raisa stepped up to volunteer for the transplant. Once she was found to be a match, she underwent surgery and donated her kidney to Gomez, as per 7news.

Gomez reflected on the kind gesture when Raisa presented her with the Billboard woman of the year award in 2017. The singer honoured Raisa by saying, “I think Francia should be getting this award because she saved my life,” during her speech.

The fallout

Despite Raisa’s act of selfless love and sacrifice, her friendship with Gomez turned sour in 2018. Koimoi stated that Gomez and Raisa fell out, claiming the reason was Gomez’s unhealthy lifestyle and excessive alcohol consumption – that would also damage the kidney that Raisa gave her.

After a while though, the pair appeared to move past their issues and get their friendship back on track. In November 2019, Raisa joyfully commented on an Instagram picture of Gomez and her little sister. The two also hopped on TikTok’s “He’s a 10” trend, creating a video together in July this year. The pair was seen laughing together, sharing their thoughts and joking around, as per Teen Vogue.

But things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse again with Gomez’s newly released documentary. In it, she speaks about her health struggles but never mentions Raisa, who once gave away a part of her body for Gomez’s life.

To make matters worse, while promoting her documentary, Gomez gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which she said, “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift].”

And it didn’t stop there. When E! News used this quote on its Instagram alongside a photo of Gomez with Swift, Raisa reacted by commenting, “interesting”. She later deleted the comment, reported 7news. She also unfollowed Gomez on Instagram.

Fans clap back

But it wasn’t just Raisa who seemed to get upset. Plenty of Raisa’s fans clapped back at Gomez online, leaving comments on E! News’ post such as, “Francia saved your life! Not acknowledging her is so messed up!” Another said, “That seems kind of disrespectful to the woman who donated her kidney to her.”

While Raisa removed her comment from Instagram, a TikTok user had the chance to screenshot it and made a video about the situation on her page, which attracted more attention, as per Hollywood Life. According to the article, Gomez fanned the flames even more when she left a comment in response that simply said: “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

But this only seems to have upset fans further, with some calling Gomez’s statement passive-aggressive.

So far, the two former friends seem to remain clearly on the outs. Only time will tell whether they’ll eventually reconcile again in future.
