This year has seen a wave of Hollywood comebacks – from Hayden Christensen to Cameron Diaz – but one actor in particular has risen from the ashes in spectacular style after a decades-long hiatus: Brendan Fraser. And perhaps his story is the most heartwarming of all.

Now he’s celebrating his success with his rarely seen kids, Leland and Holden Fraser, who supported their dad at a New York screening of The Whale on November 30.

After ruling tinsel town with hits like George of the Jungle, The Mummy franchise and Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Fraser, who had been a regular fixture on weekly celebrity news sites, suddenly fell off the radar. It wasn’t until years later than fans learned why.

A mixture of factors were to blame, including serious back injuries from filming, his expensive divorce from wife Afton Smith, and his 2018 sexual harassment allegations against a big Hollywood executive.

So, what do we know about Holden and Leland, now that they’ve made their red carpet debut?

Brendan Fraser reportedly met actress Afton Smith at a barbecue hosted by Winona Ryder in 1993, per AmoMama, and the two tied the knot at the height of his fame in 1998. The couple welcomed three sons during their marriage: Griffin Arthur in 2002; Holden Fletcher in 2004; and Leland Francis in 2006.

When Fraser and Smith announced their divorce in 2007, their publicist said that the couple had split amicably, per Fox News. However, things turned sour when Fraser sought to have his US$50,000 per month spousal support amended four years after the divorce. His ex-wife accused him of fraud, while Fraser argued he had hefty medical bills to deal with, according to the New York Post.

Although they share custody of their three kids, Fraser and Smith live in different states and the trio stay with their mum in Connecticut. “But they’re here all the time,” he told GQ, referring to his nearby home in Bedford, New York.

Both of their profiles are filled with casting photos, though it’s unclear what jobs they’ve landed yet.

One thing’s for certain though – at 190cm (Leland) and 188cm (Holden), they’ve definitely inherited their dad’s tall physique and chiselled jawline!

Acting and musical talents

Back in 2010, Fraser was asked whether his kids would follow in his acting footsteps. He told People, “all children are actors, and I think they are the best actors”, adding, “They’re like little Greek tragedians. They’re so pure. ‘No, I will not go to bed! No!’ ‘I love you so much!’ ‘I hate you!’ It’s rage, fear, lust, joy. That’s what they teach in actor’s school, and all kids do is that.”

Fraser also previously told Red Book Mag about Holden’s natural eloquence. “[Holden] said, ‘Daddy, it’s raining petals’, that was poetry that just melted my heart into a mushy, yummy Fudgsicle.”

Meanwhile, Leland is a musician at heart. A quick glance at his Instagram page shows his guitar playing abilities. According to Us Weekly, he’s part of a band called The Alligators.

Fraser and his family are rarely seen in the public eye and that’s probably by design. His kids are hardly photographed so their appearance at their dad’s recent screening was a big deal for fans of the beloved actor. Brendan does, however, speak fondly about his three sons in interviews with media.

Their brother, Griffin, is on the autism spectrum

Leland and Holden’s brother, Griffin, didn’t attend the red carpet, but Brendan has opened up about his love for his eldest child. In November he revealed to Interview Magazine that he was inspired by Griffin to play the role of 270kg Charlie in The Whale.

“My oldest son Griffin has special needs,” the Oscar-tipped actor told the publication. “He’s autistic. He just turned 20. He’s a big kid. He’s six foot five. He’s got big hands and feet, a big body. I understand intimately what it is to be close to a person who lives with obesity.”

He added that Griffin is the “happiest person in [his] life” and that being with his kids and their mum has given him so much love. “If ever I needed to hold something of value up to try and translate that to what was important to Charlie, I didn’t have to look far.”

Fraser, who received a six-minute standing ovation and cried tears of joy at the Venice Film Festival, said that the emotional portrayal of his reclusive character in the film made him want to protect his three sons from feeling rejected by society.

“I have three kids of my own,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I have as much love as I’ll ever need for the rest of my life. The thought that they might someday be overlooked or forgotten is something that I can’t imagine, if that was really a circumstance in my life that’s similar to the one that Charlie lives, the pain that the man goes through.”
