The Ambani heirs’ epic 2022: from twin baby joy and Prithvi’s school life, to Mukesh’s succession plan for Akash, Isha and Anant at Reliance and the Indian billionaire’s Dubai property
It’s been a heck of a year for one of the world’s richest families, the Ambanis.
Family head Mukesh Ambani saw his wealth soar to around US$91 billion, according to Forbes. His children are getting even more involved in the family business, Reliance Industries, with big shifts that resulted in Isha, Akash and Anant taking the helm of different parts of the company.
Mukesh, meanwhile, dug deep into his pockets to spend big on two properties in Dubai, with the landmark deals going viral. The family also celebrated the addition of twins after Isha and her husband Anand Piramal welcomed a boy and girl in November.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Ambanis and their crazy, luxury year that saw them make plenty of headlines.
Family first in Reliance Industries’ business moves
This year saw the power transition from Mukesh, 65, to his three children at the billion-dollar family company, Reliance Industries. Mukesh told shareholders at the 45th annual general meeting that Akash and Isha, both 31, would head telecoms and retail, respectively. Anant, 27, would lead a new energy unit.
According to Business Today India, the mogul said that while his children would be ushering in a new generation of leaders, he would remain involved in the business to provide mentorship where needed. The move has been widely accepted, with the three children already making their mark in the business.
Isha Ambani’s twin baby news
Isha, daughter to Mukesh and Nita, welcomed twins on November 19. NDTV reports the Ambani heir and her husband Anand Piramal had a boy and girl.
The couple managed to keep their pregnancy out of the spotlight so the baby news was a surprise to most. The baby girl is named Aadiya and the baby boy Krishna.
Isha and her twin brother Anant were conceived via IVF after Nita struggled to fall pregnant for years. Limited details on the pregnancy and birth have been made available.
Mukesh Ambani’s luxury pads in Dubai
Mukesh cemented his name in the property history books after dropping US$243 million on two luxury homes in Dubai in just two months. Both deals broke property records in the region. Mukesh first spent US$80 million on a mansion in September – reportedly for his son, Anant.
Mukesh later spent US$163 million on a beachside villa in a private deal. NDTV reports the owner of the home is well-known Kuwaiti businessman Mohammed Alshaya. News of the sale was only revealed when the Dubai Land Department reported the property was sold on the Palm Jumeirah.
Ambani security nightmare
The Ambani family rallied together after threatening phone calls were made against them. Mukesh, Nita, Isha, Anant and Akash had extra security brought in after multiple calls were made threatening the lives of the family.
Police arrested a suspect after the location of the calls was identified. Times Now News said police believed the man was “mentally unstable”. Hindustan Times stated that the man’s lawyer told officials he had been undergoing treatment when he made the calls.
Baby Prithvi starts school
First born grandchild to Mukesh and Nita, Prithvi Ambani, began his school life in March. Nicknamed the Prince of India, Prithvi was seen attending his first day at Sunflower Nursery School in Malabar Hill, Mumbai, per Economic Times.
His parents, Shloka Mehta and Akash, took him to school. Times Now News reports Shloka and Akash want to give their son a normal life, despite the family he was born into. Despite their attempts, baby Prithvi will go to school with a security detail and medical doctor on call.
