It’s fair to say that every time the Duchess of Sussex appears in public, the world takes note. And while her critics may scrutinise her behaviour, her fans are more likely to be scrutinising her fashion choices.

From the brands she’s wearing to her carefully chosen accessories for every occasion, Markle knows how to dress – and if you’ve been paying attention you’ll have noticed that her jewellery is often the highlight of her ensemble.

From necklaces to bangles, earrings to rings, Markle tends towards the classic, understated and meaningful. Oh, and did we mention expensive? Her sizeable jewellery box contains pieces from the world’s top jewellers, including a handful of rare custom items. Value-wise they’d no doubt also top a few lists. But which piece is worth the most?

In one of her first big public appearances post-pandemic at the Invictus Games in the Netherlands last year, the Duchess of Sussex wore an eye-catching necklace: a yellow gold rendition of Cartier’s nail-shaped Juste un Clou necklace accented with diamonds.

One of the brand’s edgier pieces, the Juste un Clou – translated as “just a nail” was designed by Aldo Cipullo in New York’s 1970s. According to Cartier, it “reflects the bold spirit of the era” and is worn by those wanting to make a statement that is original, independent, fearless, and free. Who better to pull that off than Markle?

6. Lorraine Schwartz Diamond & Onyx Jacket Earrings – US$40,000

In addition to yellow gold, diamonds also feature heavily in Markle’s jewellery collection. A case in point? When she was spotted at the Trooping the Colour festivities and The Lion King premiere in London in 2019 wearing this pair of Lorraine Schwartz diamond studs.

The earrings – along with a ring reportedly made from the same stone – caused a stir when British media reported they had been fashioned from a diamond gifted to her by a wealthy individual in the Middle East. Customised with removable black onyx jackets, they can be worn in two different ways depending on her mood, The Richest reports, estimating that the earrings are worth around US$40,000.

Markle chose Cartier to shine bright for her big day when she married Prince Harry in 2018. After emerging from the car at St George’s Chapel at Windsor in her Givenchy wedding gown and a pair of Galanterie de Cartier stud earrings for the ceremony, it was in fact the drop diamond pair she chose for her wedding reception that made the biggest impact.

Coming from Cartier’s Reflection collection, the earrings are 18k white gold, each set with 19 brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 1.64 carats, and with 10 baguette-cut diamonds totalling 2.25 carats. The earrings are worth an impressive US$66,500.

4. Princess Diana’s Asprey ring – US$98,000

Another high impact sparkler that made an appearance at Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding reception? Princess Diana’s famous blue ring. The huge emerald-cut aquamarine is set on a 24k yellow gold band and was fashioned by Asprey in 1996 from a stone gifted to Diana by her friend Lucia Flecha de Lima, according to British media.

Princess Diana only wore the ring twice before her tragic death in 1997 according to the Royal Watcher blog: once on a trip to Sydney, and once at a Christie’s auction of her wardrobe. Markle definitely ticked off the “something borrowed, something blue” box when she wore this precious piece thought to be worth at least US$98,000.

In 2019, Markle was spotted out and about with a Lorraine Schwartz ring gifted to her by Prince Harry to celebrate their wedding anniversary and to reflect their growing family. The conflict-free diamond eternity ring featured the three different birthstones of Meghan, Harry and Archie: peridot, blue sapphire and green emerald, according to British media.

The ring was thought to be worth around US$80,000 until Markle changed the gold band to a delicate diamond-studded one, increasing its value to US$105,000, British media reported. It is expected to be worth even more in the future if she adds their daughter Lilibet’s birthstone.

Paired with the Galanterie de Cartier stud earrings on Markle’s wedding day was a Reflection de Cartier bracelet, which had an 18k white gold setting, 104 brilliant cut diamonds, and 52 baguette-cut diamonds totalling 5.61 carats, per Meghan’s Mirror.

1. Engagement ring – US$350,000

What makes a royal engagement ring special, like Meghan Markle’s from Prince Harry? It all lies in the carat count, material, and the thought that goes into its design. Photo: @fiorese_jewelry/Instagram
Anyone who’s seen Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary or read Harry’s book knows that the prince is wildly in love with the former Suits actress. So when he got down on one knee and popped the question, he made sure he’d gone all-out on the ring. The piece was designed by Prince Harry in collaboration with court jeweller Cleave & Co, according to People.

The yellow gold band has not one but three diamonds: a central rock of three carats from Botswana, where the couple had holidayed together, and two diamonds on either side from Princess Diana’s collection. Markle showed off the ring at Kensington Palace when the pair announced their engagement in 2017.
