Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed on Netflix’s Harry & Meghan docuseries that they flew together to Botswana’s US$2,000 per night Meno-A-Kwena luxury tents – after meeting just twice

The British royal has long found sanctuary from the media in Africa – apart from wooing Meghan on safaris, Harry has also led conservation projects in Mozambique and Malawi

In their bombshell Netflix documentary, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed that back in 2018 they had planned to move to South Africa to continue their charity work and avoid the British media.

A country close to both of their hearts, it seemed the perfect place to escape to. However, after the story was leaked to the press, the couple were forced to scrap the idea.

Prince Harry’s long-standing love affair with Africa – and in particular with South Africa – is well known. Even his uncle, Charles Spencer, moved to Cape Town in 1996 to escape the glare of the tabloids after Princess Diana’s death, per AP.

Following in his footsteps, Harry busied himself with projects around Africa to take himself out of the spotlight. As his charity initiatives grew, so too did his visits to the continent.

In a speech at the United Nations in 2022, Harry said Africa inspired “hope” and for most of his life has provided a “lifeline”.

It is in Africa that he found solace during his darkest times. And it is in Africa that he cemented his love with his future wife, Meghan Markle.
