Meghan Markle has flooded the internet once again, this time with for her new “anti-royal” makeover unveiled at her friend Misan Harriman’s Ted Talk on April 23.

The Duchess of Sussex looked flawless and as polished as ever, showing off her straightened hair and glowing skin as she made her first public appearance since it was announced she wouldn’t be attending King Charles’ upcoming coronation on May 6.

Being the queen of controversy, however, Markle’s fresh face and “quiet luxury” appeal received the usual backlash from online trolls and tabloid media who were quick to suggest she’d had some kind of surgery, or called her a “wannabe” Kate Middleton.

Knowing Ms Markle, this look was carefully planned out, and has been described as a tactical power move by some amid her absence from the royal happenings. According to The Telegraph, the savvy actress often leverages her beauty and the power of subliminal messaging, and her new look is no coincidence.

Let’s take a closer look at the Suits star’s strategic, and frankly iconic, “Montecito makeover”.

The Ted Talk

During Nigerian photographer Misan Harriman’s Ted Talk in April, the American actress made a surprise appearance via video. She gave an introduction to her long-time friend’s work and his “unmatched eye for a good photograph”. Harriman has captured numerous iconic shots of Meghan and Harry, including portraits of their daughter Princess Lilibet at Frogmore Cottage.

The 41-year-old duchess looked stunning for her cameo, with her skin looking visibly wrinkle-free, and showing a clear confidence. She swapped out waves for stick-straight, layered hair in a new reddish-brown hue, and opted for a pale blush Brandon Maxwell sheath dress – a subtle nod to the current “quiet luxury” trend made popular by shows like Succession.

The facelift claims

Some thought Meghan Markle looked so polished and perfect on screen that something more than make-up and lighting were involved. Photo: @princeharry_duchessmeghan/Instagram

Critics, however, were quick to swoop in. According to British media, the term “Meghan Markle facelift” saw a 160 per cent increase on Google within 24 hours of the video release. She was even compared to J. Lo for her strong facial features.

Make-up artist Zoe Trigwell rejected those claims in an interview with the publication, saying Markle’s flawless complexion was simply the result of good lighting and even better make-up. Markle, who reportedly has naturally blemish-free skin, has simply “upped her glam”, said Trigwell.

Suiting up

The next day, Markle joined her royal hubby Prince Harry, 38, for an NBA Los Angeles Lakers game. Again, she looked perfectly polished and swapped out her usual jeans and tee for something a little more “boss babe”.

According to British media, the Archetypes podcast host dropped US$740 on a pink linen two-piece Maxwell suit from Staud. She paired the look with heels from Aquazzura’s Purist collection and a Prada Bibliotheque leather chain clutch, which retails for about US$2,100. Power move, anyone?

Building her global enterprise

Markle, who released the controversial Netflix series Harry & Meghan with her husband last year, has just signed a deal with WME, a global agency specialising in entertainment, sports and fashion, as reported by Variety.

The company also represents Hollywood big-names like Ben Affleck, Jessica Alba, Hugh Jackman, Serena Williams and Matt Damon. According to the report, her new partnership will focus on building Markle’s global enterprises, including Archetypes, film and TV production and brand partnerships – but not acting.

It seems that they’ve been enjoying life in the upscale neighbourhood of Montecito, attending polo clubs, enjoying family life and catching up regularly with Markle’s “bestie” Oprah Winfrey. Their gorgeous, Mediterranean-style, nine-bedroom, 16-bathroom mansion reportedly cost around US$15 million, and is indeed a far cry from Buckingham Palace – or Frogmore Cottage, which they’ve since been “requested to vacate” according to the BBC, and as confirmed by the couple.

Why isn’t Meghan Markle going to King Charles’ coronation?

It’s not news that Meghan and Harry caused a stir last year – and this year with Harry’s new memoir Spare, which revealed the ins and outs of life in the royal family – but Meghan has a valid reason for not attending her in-laws’ big day.

The official reason is that she will be celebrating her son Archie’s fourth birthday in California, which happens to be on the same day as the coronation. Harry will be present for his father’s crowning ceremony, but not the other festivities. According to NDTV, Princess Diana’s son will be seated 10 rows behind his blue-blooded relatives.
