With a net worth of US$87 billion (per Forbes), Reliance Industries’ 66-year-old boss Mukesh Ambani is preparing to pass the baton on to the next generation. As his children become more immersed in the family business, they too are making sure that the Ambani name and legacy live on.

The latest addition to the Ambani fold? A baby girl – the fourth grandchild to Mukesh and Nita Ambani. Just a month after revealing she was pregnant, Shloka Mehta has given birth.

Here’s what you need to know about the future Ambani generation and how future-proofing their wealth is a priority for Asia’s richest family.

When you are born into one of the wealthiest and most famous families in the world, you can bet your life is going to be filled with luxury. Mehta and Akash welcomed their first child, Prithvi, who is also the first Ambani grandchild, in December 2020. Prithvi has dominated headlines for his star-studded birthday parties where the Ambani family flaunt their wealth in celebration of the next generation.

When he turned two, a wonderland birthday party was held at the Jio World Garden in Mumbai. The Economic Times reports the venue had balloons, candy canes, neon lights and a Christmas tree. Celebrity guests included cricket stars Krunal Pandya and producer Karan Johar.

In a surprise announcement last year, Mukesh and Nita’s daughter Isha and her husband Anand Piramal welcomed twins in the US on November 19, 2022. Twins Krishna and Aadiya were gifted customised wardrobes by the Ambani grandparents, as per The Economic Times. The wardrobes were filled with pastel-coloured fake flowers and teddy bears.

The couple got married in 2018. Hindustan Times reports that a puja (a ceremonial worship) was planned when the family returned to mark the special occasion.

Isha herself is a twin to Akash and her mum Nita has spoken about undergoing IVF after being told she would never have children, per The Times of India.

The succession plan

After much speculation about the future of Reliance Industries, the Indian billionaire detailed his succession plans to shareholders last year. Mukesh said that his children, Akash, Isha and Anant, were being “mentored on a daily basis by our senior leaders, including myself”. Per CNN, the business mogul said that there were no plans of him retiring soon, but he was ensuring the future sustainability of the business.

Twins Akash and Isha would lead the company’s telecommunications and retail business respectively, while Anant is being mentored to focus on new energy.

Mukesh’s father Dhirubhai founded the family company. But when he died in 2002 without a will, a widely reported war between Mukesh and his brother Anil almost destroyed the family. Mukesh’s swift moves to ensure a proper succession plan to his own children has ensured that each one of his family members has a place and stake in the business.
