Villa Balbiano is one of the largest private residences on Lake Como and if it looks familiar to you, that’s because it probably is. The grand palazzo was the set of the home of family patriarch Aldo Gucci in the film House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga.

Built in the late 16th century by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, who used it as his primary residence, the palazzo spans nearly two hectares (five acres) of lush grounds and features an extensive garden, outdoor swimming pool, private pier and boathouse.

Its historic interiors showcase exquisite objets d’art and period furniture, while breathtaking 17th-century frescoes by the legendary Recchi brothers and Agostino Silva grace the walls. Offering six luxurious suites, it comes with a steep price tag, with basic villa rentals starting from US$467,000 (420,000 euros) per week for up to 12 guests, according to booking website My Private Villas.

The villa is just one of the many treasures nestled on the shores of Lake Como, the third-largest lake in Italy set against the picturesque foothills of the Alps. Since Roman times, the region has been frequented by aristocrats drawn to its breathtaking landscape, Renaissance architecture and grand resorts. Luminaries such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill and the British royal family have all been among its esteemed guests.

Today, Lake Como is still a home away from home for the most affluent, counting a lengthy roster of celebrities and public figures like George Clooney, Madonna – and Gianni Versace, when he was still alive. His villa was sold in the 2000s.

The area is also a sought-after location for sumptuous weddings, with stars like American singer John Legend and model Chrissy Teigen, as well as Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, choosing to exchange their vows amid the stunning scenery.
