Look around and it’s everywhere. On red (or rather pink) carpets, on the streets and definitely on social media. Since last year, the push for hot-pink colour palettes, ultra-feminine silhouettes and Barbie-branded accessories has fuelled a style trend that honours the 1950s Mattel doll with a playful, nostalgic twist.

And that trend has received resounding endorsement by fashion powerhouses like Valentino, whose 2022 autumn/winter show was a fuchsia explosion, while Chanel too embraced the style in its cruise collection for 2023/24, cementing the aesthetic’s place in the haute couture world.

Barbiecore was further accentuated as a wardrobe essential when celebrities from Zendaya to Gemma Chan strutted out in head-to-toe pinkness. The icing on the cake was when Barbie, the anticipated film directed by Greta Gerwig, finally released and excited fans across the globe attended opening weekend wearing ensembles inspired by the iconic toy.

With Barbiecore in full swing, we turn our attention to the Asian celebrities who are truly owning this fabulous style this year.

1. Deborah Hung

Deborah Hung, the wife of Hong Kong casino tycoon Stephen Hung, has long embraced the bold aesthetic before it became a trend. A quick scroll through her Instagram proves that she is practically Asia’s very own human Barbie doll, with a wardrobe that includes pink pieces from Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel and Fendi. For one of her latest looks, the Mexican-born Bling Empire star arrived back in Hong Kong in June wearing a celebratory baby pink bow ensemble.

2. Blackpink

Considering the word is in its name, it’s hardly surprising that K-pop mega-group Blackpink often dons pink (and black) outfits on stage. During their historic Coachella performance in April, Jisoo, Lisa, Rosé and Jennie switched between several stunning outfits. But the best moment was perhaps this bedazzled structured corset look designed by Mugler’s Casey Cadwallader.

3. Nayeon

Another K-pop queen owning the trend is Twice’s Nayeon. In June, the talented fashionista posted a series of photos of herself donning some serious Barbiecore, wearing a sparkly pink strapless mini-dress under a fluffy lined shawl, complete with a tiara.

4. Grace Chan

This former Hong Kong beauty queen showed her love for Barbie in an Instagram Reel she posted earlier this week. But she’s always thinking pink and also shared this post of her wearing a strapless gown from local fashion brand Sau Lee at Butter cake shop in Hong Kong earlier this month.

5. Shay Mitchell

Filipina-Irish-American actress Shay Mitchell went all out for Barbie this year as she posed for several photoshoots dressed in outfits inspired by the doll. One of our favourites is this pic she posted in July, wearing a form-fitting fuchsia pink catsuit with a heart-embellished belt and chunky bangles in classic Barbie style.

6. Tina Leung

The Hong Kong-New York fashion icon opted for a preppier Barbiecore look, wearing a stylish Self Portrait two-piece set with sparkly Michael Kors heels during a trip to the White House in May.

7. Jessica Jung

Korean-American star Jessica Jung, a former member of K-pop group Girls’ Generation, showed off some Barbiecore in this chic cardigan with head-to-toe pink colours back in February.

8. Simone Ashley

The Bridgerton actress previously channelled Barbiecore when she wore a fuchsia-pink jumpsuit from Pier Paolo Piccioli’s monochromatic autumn/winter 2022 collection at last year’s Baftas.

This year, she brought even more oomph to her daring style with this noughties throwback “going out” dress, as described by Vogue. Ashley sparkled in the candy-pink minidress by Christopher Kane at a Tag Heuer event in April.

9. Priyanka Chopra

Bollywood icon Priyanka Chopra has been turning heads in multiple Barbiecore-inspired outfits over the past couple of years. This March, she arrived at Valentino’s Black Tie event in Paris wearing another fuchsia ensemble with logo embossing from the brand.

10. Giann Chan

Social media sensation Giann Chan promoted the Barbie movie this week by posing in a series of photos living the Barbie dream. This one of her inside a toy box is one of our favourites, as she’s gone for a simple yet eye-catching outfit that combines different shades of pink with a black vest overlay.
