Sofia Richie’s fabulous style evolution: Lionel Richie’s daughter went from edgy-chic to a ‘quiet luxury’ goddess, wearing Chanel at her wedding and with a new fashion brand under way

Sofia Richie Grainge is a name that’s long been synonymous with celebrity lineage. As the daughter of music icon Lionel Richie and the half-sister to TV personality and fashionista Nicole Richie, the 24-year-old has swiftly risen through the ranks of the young Hollywood elite (though her sun-kissed California looks and natural flair for style probably helped, too).

Now, with the recent news that the budding trendsetter intends to launch her own clothing label, it appears that Richie is ready to branch out and leave her personal mark on the fashion industry in a big way.

Let’s take a closer look at how the youngest Richie daughter has evolved from a fashion-forward ingénue to designing one of the year’s most hotly anticipated labels.

It’s hard to believe now but back in the day, Richie was known for her casual street style with a touch of edginess. As a teenager, she donned graphic tees, bomber jackets and biker boots, before she started to embrace a mix of high-end streetwear – think hoodies by Vetements and Adidas tracksuits – and bohemian elements.

And she definitely pulled it off, earning praise from Vogue France for nailing casual street style.

The rise of “quiet luxury”

As her modelling career took off, Richie began to adopt a more polished and sophisticated style. She started to be seen in designer outfits, attending fashion weeks and gracing magazine covers, which also meant experimenting with high-fashion looks and couture pieces.

As her fame grew, her style became a blend of luxury and comfort. She began working with stylist Liat Baruch, who has been best friends with Sofia’s half-sis Nicole for 25 years, per People magazine.

Richie began cultivating more “quiet luxury” or “stealth wealth” looks that she would soon become famous for: minimalist-chic, elegant pieces, understated accessories, soft colour palettes and a lack of conspicuous branding.

Then came Richie’s lavish wedding to Elliot Grainge at the illustrious Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the south of France. According to HITC, it’s estimated to have costed up to US$4 million.

According to the interview, Richie worked directly with the French fashion house’s head of couture and creative director, flying to Paris a total of seven times over nine months to design three exquisite looks that elevated bridal chic to stratospheric new heights.

And when the bride-to-be casually made her TikTok debut by asking for advice on a “dinner outfit”, it wasn’t long before the world took notice of her impeccable sartorial eye. Her videos earned plenty of views, establishing Richie as a new “It” girl to watch.

She’s been refining her style for over a decade, in front of and behind the scenes

Richie has nearly a decade of experience in the fashion industry, starting her career as a runway model for coveted designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Jeremy Scott, Yeezy, and of course, her go-to luxury label, Chanel.

But she’s expanded her horizons beyond the runway over the years as well. She has been honing her eye for design, be it teaming up with big sis Nicole for a 60s-inspired House of Harlow collaboration; a curated edit of chic-yet-affordable summer ‘fits for River Island; or a Rolla’s Jeans vintage denim collection.

Though there’s no definitive release date yet, the collection sounds to be already well under way. According to Richie’s interview with Who What Wear, she’s been co-designing the label with an unnamed business associate for months, taking care to ensure the sample pieces they’ve already whipped up are true to Richie’s timeless sensibilities.
