With over a million and a half Instagram followers and a hit Netflix movie under his belt, it can’t be long before Taiwanese star Greg Hsu Kuang-han lands himself an international fan base.

For those who need a refresher, Hsu plays Wu Ming-han, a police officer who marries the ghost of a murder victim in the chart-topping Netflix film Marry My Dead Body. While global fans are getting their first taste of Hsu’s talents in this quirky supernatural comedy, the 32-year-old has long been a staple in the Asian entertainment scene.

From as early as the start of his career, it seemed that Hsu’s star was always destined to rise. He debuted in Jay Chou’s music video for “Class 3-2” back in 2003. A decade later, in 2013, he starred in the Malaysian television series Dive into Love.

His impressive performance eventually led him to star in over a dozen film and TV productions, including Have You Ever Fallen in Love, Miss Jiang? and Someday or One Day.

He’s been nominated twice for the Golden Bell Awards and won the Tencent Video TV and Movie Awards’ promising actor of the year title in 2020.

But his talents aren’t limited to just acting. In 2020, he delighted fans with his first single “Yesterday No More”, which reportedly garnered the No 1 spot on streaming platform KKBox’s charts in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. He followed up the success with his eponymous debut album Greg Han, further broadening his reach and appeal as an artist.

The success of acts such as Blackpink, BTS and actors Vachirawit Chivaaree and Metawin Opas-iamkajorn, who found stardom through Thai Boys’ Love (BL) productions, proves Asian entertainment can transcend borders and language.

Hsu’s talents and good looks have helped him break into non-Chinese speaking markets too – he appeared in a vlog with Super Junior D&E members and was a presenter at the Baeksang Arts Awards this year, where he shared a moment with his idol, South Korean pop star IU.

He’s also attracted the mainland Chinese market. For example, Hsu’s A Sun and Someday or One Day garnered No 1 spots for Chinese-language films and series, respectively, on China’s streaming platform Douban in 2020. The success of the productions seems to have solidified his star power in the mainland and earned him the 69th spot on Forbes China’s Celebrity 100 list the same year.

It’s not difficult to understand why fans and international luxury brands alike are drawn to Hsu’s appeal. His boy-next-door vibe comes through in his Instagram posts, where he often charms in that school uniform and motor scooter look that is quintessentially representative of Taiwanese youth culture.

His rising presence in Asia has caught the attention of luxury fashion house Fendi, who named him their brand ambassador last year. He sat in the front row of the Italian brand’s men’s spring/summer 2024 fashion show earlier this year.
