Kate Middleton must follow these 5 royal rules – but not Meghan Markle: Prince Harry’s wife can rock bold fashion, vote in elections and take all the fan selfies she’d like

- Whether wearing tiaras to formal occasions or attending Christmas church services, Markle gets a free pass now she’s no longer a royal – but in some cases never followed the rules in the first place
- Middleton had to do a photo call after giving birth, as well as a royal christening – something Tyler Perry dreaded when he was asked to be Lilibet’s godfather, he said in the Sussexes’ Netflix series
Kate Middleton became a full-time working member of the royal family after marrying Prince William in 2011, and since Prince William is the eldest son of King Charles III, the couple are likely to become the next king and queen of the UK.

As a result, there are many rules and protocols that Kate Middleton, who is now Princess of Wales, must follow which Meghan Markle never had to.
Markle was a full-time working royal for just under two years. She moved to London and became the Duchess of Sussex upon her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018; but by January 2020, the couple had announced their step back from royal duties and relocated to North America.

Due to her more senior position within the family, Middleton was always held to a higher standard when it came to royal rules. For example, she wasn’t allowed to attend Christmas Day celebrations with the royal family until she was married, but Markle was allowed to attend before she wed Prince Harry. Middleton has also been expected to adhere to more royal-style rules, even when Markle was a senior royal.
But since Markle quit royal duties, there are even more rules and protocols that she has been allowed to break – here are just a few.
1. Attending the royal Christmas Day church service before marriage
