They may play rivals in Everything Everywhere All at Once, but Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh’s real-life friendship, seemingly built on a bedrock of mutual respect and admiration, is the stuff of legend. Their public shows of support and love for one another is a shining example that authentic Hollywood friendships can truly exist.

Despite both being veterans in the industry, Yeoh and Curtis, who are both in their 60s, have enjoyed an incredible start to 2023, landing awards and attending red carpets left, right and centre.

We take a look back at their sweetest friendship moments, what they have in common, and how they became this year’s “awards season besties”, as lovingly dubbed by the media.

According to Yeoh’s interview with People last month, the leading ladies have been acquainted for many years, but they really got to know one another when they worked together in A24’s Oscar-sweeping hit EEAAO.

“We fell in love on first email,” Yeoh told the publication, “She [Curtis] was like, ‘Let’s ditch the directors of the movie, the Daniels, and run away!’ I was like, ‘A woman after my own heart.’”

Long-time Hollywood veterans

Yeoh and Curtis are known as long-time veterans in the entertainment world.

The Malaysian-born ballet dancer-turned-actress carved her path to Hong Kong cinematic stardom in the 80s and 90s with Yes, Madam! and Police Story 3: Supercop, before landing global mega hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000. She got her first Hollywood gig as a Bond Girl in Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997, and has since added blockbusters like The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Star Trek franchises, and Marvel’s Shang-Chi to her résumé.

Meanwhile, Curtis, the daughter of late Hollywood icons Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, got her big break in 1978 when she played the lead in horror flick Halloween. Today, she has over 80 acting credits to her name, with titles including Freaky Friday and Scream Queens.

Making history at the Oscars

Together, Yeoh and Curtis were a chaotic yet brilliant force of nature in the multiverse-themed hit. After winning multiple accolades at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards, the film made history at the esteemed Oscars ceremony, taking home seven statues.

Not only was it Yeoh’s first Academy Award in her 40-plus-year career, she also became the first Asian woman to win in the best actress category. Curtis also brought home her first award from the event as best supporting actress after attending the ceremony for 50 years.

Supportive shout-outs

The talented ladies have made it abundantly clear that their friendship is filled with genuine affection and respect for one another. They regularly share shout-outs on their social media accounts, have been photographed hugging and kissing, and even have custom-printed T-shirts dedicated to their companionship.

“I love Michelle Yeoh. We love each other. We fell in love with each other,” Curtis joked to Entertainment Tonight after the SAG awards in February. Yeoh clearly shares the same sentiment, telling People, “When you meet someone and have that connection, it’s not the length of time you’ve known them. A friendship became a very precious relationship.”

The dynamic duo also cheer on their fellow co-stars including Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan and James Hong, to name a few.

Solid love lives

They may share a loving relationship, but Yeoh and Curtis’ respective love lives also appear to be going strong.

Curtis has been married to her British-American director husband Christopher Guest, 75, since 1984, and the couple share two daughters together. Yeoh, who was previously married to reported Hong Kong millionaire and fashion entrepreneur Dickson Poon, has been with her Formula One fiancé Jean Todt since 2004.

In their 60s and thriving

As Yeoh put it in her Oscars award acceptance speech, “Ladies, don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime.”

With Yeoh being 60 and Curtis at 64, the two women have broken barriers in the industry and challenged Hollywood’s beauty standards by embracing their age with timeless grace. Not to mention, they’re looking as youthful as ever. Both actresses have already been cast for numerous upcoming films.

In an industry as cutthroat as Tinseltown, the besties are ready to take it by storm once again, and are providing an inspirational beacon for many along the way.
