Has Amber Heard ‘quit’ Hollywood for a quiet life in Spain? A year after the Johnny Depp trial, the bilingual Aquaman actress sold her house and relocated to Palma de Mallorca with baby Oonagh Paige

It’s been little over a year since the trial of Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard revealed astonishing details about their relationship. From obscene messages to alleged substance abuse, the trial arguably shook the reputation of both Hollywood actors to an extent.

Following his win (the jury ruled in favour of Depp’s claim of defamation across three counts), Depp has seemingly edged his way back into Hollywood favour. His film Jeanne du Barry, in which he stars as Louis XV, has been selected as the opening film at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival. But what about Heard?

The Aquaman star, who had already tried to stay out of the spotlight ahead of the trial, has barely been spotted in public since it all ended. As it turns out, it seems she has quietly quit Hollywood (for now) and started afresh in Spain.

Here’s what you need to know about Heard’s life in 2023 …

The Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard trial

Last April marked the start of a six-week trial between Depp and Heard that flooded headlines. Although their marriage lasted just over a year, with Heard filing for divorce in May 2016 after 15 months, their relationship spans a decade.

Within those six weeks, the world got a glimpse inside what was described as a volatile and often strange relationship between the Hollywood A-listers.

The basis of the trial? Depp, 59, claimed Heard, 37, had defamed him in a 2018 op-ed on The Washington Post. In the column, she referred to herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse, although she didn’t mention Depp’s name.

After a deliberation in what was considered one of the most sensational trials of the year, the jury ruled in Depp’s favour. He was awarded over US$10 million in compensatory damages and US$5 million in punitive damages as a result. The jury awarded Heard US$2 million in compensatory damages and no money for punitive damages. Heard told NBC after the trial that she would stand by her word until her “dying day”.

After the trial, Heard was barely spotted out in public. According to media reports in July, Heard had made the Hamptons her home since mid-June. The star was reportedly spotted at well-known eatery Le Bilboquet in Sag Harbor on two separate occasions.

Selling her million-dollar Yucca Valley, California home

In July 2022, just a few weeks after the verdict in the trial, Heard sold her Yucca Valley home in California. The New York Post reported she sold it for US$1.1 million.

Boasting interesting geology, mountains and desert views, the compound comes with a 33-metre engineered bridge that leads to a mountainside gazebo. The desert house first got people’s attention because of its arid surroundings, having no malls and only a tiny population nearby.

The home, which is on 24,300 sq m of land, has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and an open-plan kitchen. It also has a vaulted ceiling in the dining area and floor-to-ceiling windows, which provide views of the desert surroundings.

New York Post reports Heard bought the home for US$570,000 in 2019.

The aftershocks

In December, Heard announced that she and Depp had settled their defamation suits. In a post on Instagram, she said she “made no admission” and the settlement is “not an act of concession”.

The damages to Depp by Heard were reduced to US$1 million, according to CNN. Depp pledged the money to charity and in a statement through his lawyer he said all he wanted was to “bring the truth to light”.

Spotted in Spain

In October 2022, a bikini-clad Heard was spotted on the beaches of Palma de Mallorca. She was also reportedly seen with her two-year-old daughter, Oonagh Paige, at a kids’ park in the area.

The photos show a more casual Heard, as she donned jeans and a simple black bodysuit.

CNN reported in April that Heard had spent a lot of time in Spain, as she wanted to “focus on being a mum right now”. The publication added the trial “took an emotional toll on her and she just wanted to get away from the noise and disappear from Hollywood”.

A permanent move?

Although she was initially believed to be in Spain merely on an extended visit, British media has since reported that Heard actually quietly relocated there with her daughter after being spotted there numerous times last year.

Heard is bilingual in Spanish and, in a 2019 interview with Pulso Pop News while promoting her flick, Aquaman, a video of her answering questions in Spanish went viral.

In another interview, Heard said she was born in Texas, and that helped her when she studied Spanish. Texas has a strong Spanish-speaking, Hispanic community, and in 2022 the US Census Bureau released stats that showed Hispanic residents make up more of the state’s population than its white residents.

So what’s Palma de Mallorca in Spain like?

Although it is unclear if Heard’s move is truly permanent, she has chosen one of Spain’s most famous holiday destinations to call home for the moment.

Palma is the economic and cultural hub of Mallorca. It is known for its white beaches and is nicknamed the “pearl of the Mediterranean”. With 300 days of sunshine and mild winters, the boutique luxury hotel business has boomed there as the destination becomes a tourist favourite.

The total population is just over 422,000 and, in 2020, the population growth was recorded as the fourth highest among Spanish cities, illustrating the popularity of the city.
