How does Selling Sunset’s Emma Hernan make her millions, and does she really own a private jet? The Netflix star isn’t just a realtor, but an entrepreneur who spends big on Louis Vuitton – and her dog

She may seem like the quintessential California girl on Netflix’s Selling Sunset, but Emma Hernan originally hails from the cold and decidedly less glamorous Massachusetts, just outside Boston – and it was a family holiday to LA that inspired her to one day move there, per Forbes.

“I came from very humbling beginnings,” she told Forbes, adding that her father was a firefighter while her mum stayed at home. Both were “hard workers”, which certainly seems to have rubbed off on her: current estimates put Hernan’s fortune at US$3 million, per Cosmopolitan.

So while her coworkers fight to bag the biggest commission on the Netflix show, this self-made star is already sitting pretty financially. Here’s how she did it, and what she loves to spend her hard-earned cash on.

Hernan told several publications that she first invested in the stock market as a teenager, and she did so well that she was able to help cover staffing costs at her parents’ seafood business at age 15. Her investment paid off, and the company – Yankee Trader Seafood – is still going.

Then, inspired to start her own biz, she launched Emma Leigh and Co. during the pandemic, which has since become famous for its vegan empanadas. “I own 100 per cent of my company,” she told Forbes. “I’ve put my entire savings into [it] … I feel really proud.”

She’s an angel investor

Thanks to her financial savvy, Hernan has been able to put money into other companies she believes in too. “I moved to LA and started angel investing in different start-ups,” she told Nylon magazine. From a Nanotech company making state-of-the-art batteries, to a bike company called Wheels and even Green Gorilla (which makes organic CBD), she says “getting in early on different companies and different technologies” has been the key to her success as an angel. She’s also invested in crypto in recent years.

She has her own property portfolio

Hernan was in Hollywood Hills searching for her first home when she was introduced to Jason and Brett Oppenheim, who found her the perfect place. But she soon became addicted to finding other properties, according to Grazia, and the brothers realised she had a knack for it, encouraging her to get her property agent license.

The brothers have helped Hernan buy several properties since then, including residential and commercial investment properties in LA as well as her hometown, according to the Oppenheim website.

She spends her money on her friends and family

It’s clear to anyone who follows Hernan on Instagram that her family is extremely important to her. “I love going back to Boston and spending time with them as well as bringing them to LA or on vacations with me,” she told Grazia. “No matter how busy I am, I always make sure that I get to see my family and old friends. It fuels my soul and gives me the energy to keep going.”

Hernan has a six-year old Akita mix called Benny that she rescued from a shelter where he was about to be put down. According to People, she also rescued Benny’s brother and gifted him to her aunt as a Christmas present.

Benny can be seen in several of Hernan’s Instagram photos, with the pair hanging out on sun loungers together, hiking with the family, cuddling on the sofa and grabbing coffee. Cute!

She flies by private jet and drives a fancy EV

After seeing Hernan whisk her Selling Sunset colleagues off to Cabo San Lucas on a private plane during a recent episode, many viewers online wondered just how rich she was. “You need to have wealth of at least US$100 million to actually own a jet,” wrote one user on Reddit. “There are small planes that are on the cheaper end but that is not what they are on in the show.”

“It’s clearly a charter,” wrote another, adding that the journey they took probably “only” cost US$10,000 to US$20,000 one way.

Hernan hasn’t disclosed whether she owns the swanky jet, but she does regularly fly private, since it’s the only way she can bring Benny with her, per Women’s Health magazine.

One thing she definitely does own is a limited-edition Faraday Future FF 91 2.0 Futurist Alliance electric hypercar reportedly worth an impressive US$309,000, which she showed off on her Instagram in late September.

She splurges on designer handbags and beauty products

As with all of the ladies on Selling Sunset, Hernan’s unfailingly glam look is part of the show’s appeal. Aside from stunning outfits she buys from brands such as Minna and Lovers + Friends, Hernan clearly spends big on her handbag collection too.

Among many, many others, she’s been spotted out and about with a hot pink Louis Vuitton Twist MM chain bag (worth a cool US$4,200) and an LV OnTheGo GM tote bag (worth US$2,900).

The glamorous property agent also told E! Online that she buys jewellery from local LA designer Fie Isolde, and that her favourite face cream is Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream moisturiser with hyaluronic acid. Seems like all her hard work really is paying off.

  • The blondest (and arguably nicest) of all the Netflix Selling Sunset stars, Emma Hernan might also be the show’s most entrepreneurial – investing in food, crypto and property of her own
  • Believed to be worth US$3 million, she loves to spend her hard-earned cash on her glamorous wardrobe, her family and her dog Benny – but does she really have her own private jet?
