Sporting heroes like David Beckham, Dwayne Wade and Tiger Woods probably never asked to be famous – their talent dictated it from a young age. But once you’re in the public spotlight, there’s a whole new set of challenges to navigate.

From poorly judged teenage visits and hired escorts, to parties and tours away from home, some of the world’s most well-known sportsmen have allegedly cheated on their wives or girlfriends. And even if they didn’t, the fallout from any scandal that makes global headlines often places their partners into a tricky position and causes them untold pain.

But not all of the wronged WAGs stay silent. These women decided to tell their side of the story in one way or another …

1. Coleen Rooney

Coleen Rooney has put up with more than most from her husband Wayne Rooney. She and Wayne were dating when he rose to fame as one of Manchester United’s top scorers in the mid-2000s, according to The Guardian. But before they’d even slept together, Rooney had already hired several sex workers. Despite this, the pair wed four years later and had children – only for Coleen to discover he’d strayed again while she was pregnant.

“You have so many people saying different things to you,” Coleen admitted in last year’s Amazon Prime documentary Rooney. “‘Oh why is she getting back with him?’” She added that, in those moments, she found it best to trust her gut feeling about what to do, as well as get support from her parents.

“Hopefully he’s learnt and he doesn’t get himself into any of those horrible situations again. But it’s happened and I’ve got to live with it,” she said.

2. Victoria Beckham

The Manchester United star and former Spice Girl started trending again recently when Netflix released its much-anticipated documentary about the footballer, Beckham. Fans had to wait until the final episode to discover what the couple had to say about the alleged affair between David and Rebecca Loos, his former assistant at Real Madrid, in 2003.

“It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us,” Victoria admitted on the show, adding the couple were also pitted against each other at the time. “I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare,” she added.

For his part, David neither confirmed nor denied the affair, but attempted to add some context: “I get sold overnight, the next minute I’m in a city, I don’t speak the language. More importantly, I didn’t have my family.”

3. Elin Nordegren

The golfing world was shocked to its core when it turned out that golden boy Tiger Woods hadn’t just cheated on his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren once or twice, but 120 different times. He checked into rehab for sex addiction not long after the scandal broke. The couple divorced a year later and are now reportedly friendly for their kids’ sake. But a year after the scandal, in 2010, Nordegren decided to open up to People.

Nordegren said she’d “been through hell” and was embarrassed that she hadn’t seen it coming: “I never suspected – not a once,” she told the magazine. “It’s hard to think you have this life, and then all of a sudden – was it a lie? You’re struggling because it wasn’t real. But I survived. It was hard, but it didn’t kill me.”

4. Khloé Kardashian

Fans of The Kardashians will know all too well the pain Khloé has endured as a result of the cheating men in her life. But the collapse of her short-lived marriage to basketball star Lamar Odom remains the most dramatic.

After it emerged he’d been regularly cheating on the reality star, things got worse when he overdosed in a Nevada brothel and fell into a coma. Once he recovered, Kardashian filed for divorce. She later spoke out about the ordeal to broadcaster Howard Stern.

“Love is blind” she told the radio host, saying she had no idea he was sleeping with other women. “He was so good. So nothing was on his cellphones, [but] he had an assistant. They were all on his assistant’s phone, so he was really crafty.”

5. Gabrielle Union

The Friends and Think Like a Man star began dating NBA legend Dwayne Wade in 2009. And while Wade maintains the couple were on a break in 2013 when he slept with Aja Métoyer, the baby that subsequently came out of the affair – Xavier Zechariah Wade – “shattered” Union’s soul, she said in her 2021 memoir, You Got Anything Stronger?

“It should go without saying that we were not in a good place at the time that child was conceived,” Union explained in the book, adding that she’d not spoken about it before because “I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy, I am not sure I have them now.”

Per Today, the couple have only grown closer since then, however, and currently co-parent five children.

6. Toni Terry

David Beckham’s England teammate John Terry appeared to score a double whammy when British tabloids reported he had cheated on his wife Toni with a fellow player’s former girlfriend, the model Vanessa Perroncel. And while Perroncel has strenuously denied the story, per reports, it didn’t stop a pack of journalists from following Terry’s high school sweetheart around a Dubai mall for her take on the scandal.

“It’s not just about me. I love him too much and he’s a great dad,” the then 28-year-old mother of two said in 2012. “I have had so much support from friends. I don’t want to say too much. The bottom line is I love my husband.”

The couple remain married to this day, though Terry lost his England captaincy as a result of the scandal.
