Casey, an Ohio native who graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in economics, had a long career as a TV host, reporter and anchor before becoming Florida’s first lady.

According to Fox News, she was a long-time staff member at WJXT, a local news station in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was a general assignment reporter before being promoted to morning anchor.

In 2014, she began moderating talk shows for NBC’s WTLV and ABC’s WJXX. She also hosted daily talk shows and produced sports documentaries.

When they met back in 2006, she was a news anchor at WJXT, and he was a Judge Advocate General’s Corps officer in the US Navy. Casey told First Coast News that the couple met on the driving range at the University of North Florida. Between thwacking balls off the tee, she kept looking over her shoulder to replenish her supply. According to her, her future husband thought she was looking at him, and they eventually got talking.

In his memoir The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, Ron, 45, wrote, “There was no way I was leaving that golf course without asking her out on a date.”

The couple wed three years later, and today have three children together: Madison, Mason and Mamie.

The DeSantis Disney wedding

In 2009, the couple got married at Disney World, exchanging vows at the Grand Floridian resort’s wedding pavilion, which overlooks the Cinderella Castle and Seven Seas Lagoon. In his book, the governor said he agreed to get married at Disney World because Casey’s family were “Disney enthusiasts”.

The condition was that no Disney characters would be part of the wedding. “I wanted our special day to look and feel like a traditional wedding,” he said.

Inside her cancer battle

In 2021, Casey was diagnosed with breast cancer. Per BBC, she revealed in March 2022 that she was cancer-free after five months of treatment.

During a Fox News town hall in October 2022, she opened up about her successful battle with the disease, thanking her husband for standing by her side as she fought for her life.

Casey’s cancer battle featured prominently in her husband’s 2022 campaign ad, with her tearfully telling the camera that he “was there to fight for me when I didn’t have the strength to fight for myself”.

In an interview with NBC, Casey said that her chemo sessions were gruelling and there were times when she could not even pick up her children. During the interview, she said the couple did not tell their children about her battle as they believed they were too young to understand what cancer was.

How she channels Jackie Kennedy

Casey’s style has been widely reported on, with some prominent fashion critics saying her wardrobe has “strategically” taken cues from former first ladies Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Melania Trump.

Per Insider, for DeSantis’ second inauguration as Florida governor, Casey wore a mint-green Alex Perry cape dress that retailed for US$2,600, along with white gloves and silver earrings. The outfit recalls what Kennedy Onassis wore to her daughter Caroline’s wedding in 1986, as well as styles donned by Melania Trump during her tenure as US first lady.

She is a champion equestrian

According to the Florida Governor website, Casey was on the college equestrian team and placed runner-up at the Division 1 NCAA National Championships, and is a three-time national champion equestrian.

In March this year, Casey and her family spent time at the Houston Rodeo, where she was pictured riding horses.

In an interview with Fox News, Casey said she was a shy kid and her parents encouraged her to do athletics. She was “big into horses” when she was little and thought she’d be riding for the rest of her life.
