Meet Sabrina Elba, Idris Elba’s model and activist wife: the UN goodwill ambassador married the Luther star in Vera Wang, has a skincare brand, and is pals with Bella and Gigi Hadid

In 2017, actor and rapper Idris Elba famously told Essence magazine that he didn’t plan on marrying again.

Just months later, Elba and Sabrina Dhowre met while he was filming The Mountain Between Us in Vancouver and it was reportedly “love at first sight” when their eyes met across a dimly lit jazz bar. A year later, Elba proposed at one of his film screenings in front of all the cast and crew. It seems like third time’s a charm for the 51-year-old Brit, who decided he was just too in love with Sabrina not to get married again.

And we can’t say we blame him. Here’s what you need to know about Sabrina Elba, the Luther star’s multi-hyphenate wife.

Sabrina Elba is Canadian-Somalian

Sabrina Dhowre Elba grew up in Vancouver, Canada and is of Somali origin. One of five children raised by a single mother – she has two brothers and two sisters – Elba had initially wanted to become a lawyer after studying philosophy at university, but decided to pause before applying to law school.

“I was kind of sick of school and needed a break so it was like, let me go work for a couple of years, travel … and then if I want, I can go back to school,” she told Patricia Bright on The Break podcast. “I never did end up going back.”

She’s a model

Instead she moved to London and worked for a PR company before becoming a model, signing with renowned agency IMG – the same company that has Miranda Kerr, Lily Cole and Hailey Baldwin on its books. She did shoots for British Vogue, Elle and InStyle, among others, and soon was cosying up to the likes of Anna Wintour and the Hadid sisters (who are also with IMG), per Cosmopolitan.

In 2019, Sabrina and Idris married in a lavish three-day ceremony in Morocco – chosen because it was “somewhere in between” east and west Africa – the two sides of the continent where the pair’s families originate, per Vogue. Sabrina asked her friend Roland Mouret to incorporate the patterned fabric of Idris’ Sierra Leonean tribe into a dress she wore before the ceremony, and then opted for something even more special for her wedding gown.

When Vera Wang was asked to design a dress that included a dedication to the actor on its Chantilly lace train the designer was delighted. “When she asked me to have Idris’ arm tattoo embroidered at the bottom of the train – ‘This train carries no wrongdoers’ – then I knew I was dealing with a very special woman, totally in love,” the renowned wedding dress designer told Vogue. “It was her personal tribute to Idris.”

She’s a UN goodwill ambassador and has met with Emmanuel Macron

Even before she met Idris, Sabrina cared about social causes thanks to her humanitarian mum – but after the two got together they’ve been able to supercharge their efforts. Named a UN goodwill ambassador for Ifad (the International Fund for Agricultural Development) in 2020 alongside Idris, Sabrina’s focus is on the challenges faced by rural women and girls.

After a visit to Kenya in 2022, Sabrina told Ebony magazine that she had been shocked to see the extent of the impact on the female population working in agriculture there: “They’re the custodians of Earth, and they’re facing the brunt of climate change.”

Her work has led her to spend time with the likes of French president Emmanuel Macron, who agreed to host a conference in the country for Ifad in December, and the couple were even honoured at the World Economic Forum in Davos last year for their “tangible impact” on improving the world.

She has a wellness brand with Idris, S’Able Labs

Somehow Elba has also found time to create her own skincare brand incorporating African ingredients, inspired by the fact that as a Black woman she didn’t feel she fit into the traditional wellness space. “I felt like it was [for] a very specific type of person … one race, one gender, one like, Lululemon kind of person and I thought, wait where is the wellness that I feel I can relate to?” she told Bright on The Break.
The couple have since founded an umbrella wellness brand called S’Able Labs (Elbas spelled backwards) that incorporates everything from Sabrina’s skincare products to a podcast (Coupledom).

She also loves anime and produced a TV series

When it was announced in 2021 that the Elbas had helped produce an Afro-futuristic animated series called Dantai for anime channel Crunchyroll, Idris told Den of Geek that Sabrina was the real driving force behind it.

“I can tell you that it’s mainly the brainchild of Sabrina. Her deep passion and history with anime introduced me to it. Sabrina is a super, super geek when it comes to anime,” he added.

Naturally the series focuses on a social cause, examining how the rise in biotechnology will created an ever-widening gap between rich and poor in a future society.
