It’s hard to believe One Direction first burst onto the music scene 14 years ago after appearing on The X Factor UK.

After becoming one of the biggest boy bands in history, selling around 65 million albums worldwide, according to Sony Music, the band went on hiatus in January 2016, focusing on their solo careers instead.

And while the five singers have had varying success on their own, they certainly need not worry about money. During their time together as a band, they raked in mega millions thanks to their lucrative tours, five studio albums and plenty of merchandise. Their last tour, 2015’s On The Road Again, grossed over US$200 million from 77 shows, selling over 2.3 million tickets in the process.

So how do the One Direction boys’ fortunes measure up in 2024, and who is laughing all the way to the bank? According to Celebrity Net Worth, here’s what we know …

1. Harry Styles, 30 – US$120 million

Having just celebrated his 30th birthday on February 1, Styles is undoubtedly the breakout star of the band, so it’s no surprise that he’s significantly wealthier than his bandmates. After taking a break from One Direction, Styles became a hugely successful solo star, releasing three studio albums. His last solo tour, which ended in July 2023, grossed over US$600 million across five continents, making it the fifth highest grossing tour of all time, per Billboard.

Of course, music isn’t Styles’ only income source. In recent years he’s also dabbled in acting, landing roles in films like Marvel’s Eternals (2021), Don’t Worry Darling (2022) and My Policeman (2022).

In 2021, Styles launched his direct-to-consumer beauty and lifestyle brand Pleasing with a line of nail polishes and skin products. These days, Styles is also on a mission to expand his fashion portfolio. Last month, he invested a minority stake in the British fashion brand Steven Stokey-Daley, per Vogue. The brand announced the news at the S.S. Daley autumn 2024 show in Florence, Italy, giving the designer financial support to “relaunch” the direct-to-consumer website and hire more staff.

2. Zayn Malik, 31 – US$75 million

Even after unexpectedly quitting the band in March 2015 and keeping a relatively low profile over the years, Malik is still making a killing. He dropped his third album, Nobody is Listening, back in 2021. Last year, he signed a record deal with Mercury Records, per Billboard, with new music still in the pipeline. On top of that, his new film 10 Lives, in which he voices a pair of animated bumblebees, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival recently.

And it seems Malik is ready for a return to the spotlight. Last month, he made his first public appearance in six years, attending the Kenzo show at Paris Fashion Week. Before that, he was last spotted sitting front row at a runway show in 2018 when he attended a Tom Ford show at New York Fashion Week.

The singer, who shares three-year-old daughter Khai with ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid, says fatherhood has kept him busy in recent years. During a rare 2023 interview with podcaster Alex Cooper on her show Call Her Daddy, he revealed: “Since I’ve had my daughter, the main thing in my mind is trying to be a good example to her.”

3. Niall Horan, 30 – US$70 million

Irish singer Niall Horan released his third album, The Show, in June 2023, with epic plans for the year ahead. Horan is preparing to embark on a world tour in 2024, which he says he’s been dreaming up for years, per ABC news. Following 2018’s Flicker World Tour, The Show: Live on Tour will be Horan’s biggest to date, kicking off in Belfast this month and making stops in major cities like London, Sydney and Tokyo before heading to North America in May.

With so much touring on his plate, Horan has to step back from his mentoring role on The Voice, which he started in 2022. He confirmed that season 24 will be his last due to his busy schedule. Who could blame him?

4. Louis Tomlinson, 32 – US$70 million

Since the band’s indefinite hiatus, Louis Tomlinson has gone on to release two solo albums – 2020’s Walls and 2022’s Faith in the Future. The latter became Tomlinson’s first solo album to debut at No 1 on the UK Albums Chart, reaching an impressive No 5 on America’s Billboard chart.

Much like his band mates, he makes a fortune by touring and is currently on the road performing his second solo show. The Faith in the Future tour kicked off in 2023 and wraps up in Mexico in June.

Last year, Tomlinson officially launched his 28 streetwear-inspired unisex clothing line, where he serves as creative director.

5. Liam Payne, 30 – US$70 million

His solo career might not be as established as his bandmates’, but Liam Payne is also worth a hefty amount.

Payne, who released one album to mostly negative reviews, spent time in a US wellness clinic last year after openly speaking about his mental health struggles and alcohol addiction. In September, he also rushed to hospital after falling ill during a holiday in Italy – just weeks after he was treated for a serious kidney infection. Due to his health struggles, he was forced to cancel his solo tour and push back new music plans.

Fortunately, he’s getting back on his feet and is planning to release his new single after posting a studio clip on his re-branded Instagram page recently.

  • Since tracks like ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘Night Changes’, 1D members have all embarked on their own solo careers, with Tomlinson’s album Faith in the Future debuting at No 1 on UK Albums Chart
  • Styles’ last solo tour grossed US$600 million across five continents while Malik shares a daughter with supermodel Gigi Hadid; meanwhile, Niall Horan will kick off The Show: Live on Tour this month
