Per The New York Times, Zhukova was a molecular biologist who focused on studying diabetes. According to the New Yorker, she left Russia in 1991 to do research in Houston, Texas. She took her daughter Dasha with her.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zhukova decided to make the US her home, later moving to Los Angeles.

She enrolled at UC Santa Barbara and majored in Russian literature. She also signed up for pre-med classes, hoping to be a paediatrician, but by 2003 she started developing an interest in alternative medication instead. Her father then invited her to stay with him in London to help explore her career options.
