Why is The Crow remake so controversial? The 1994 cult classic was marked by the tragic death of Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee – and fans aren’t happy with new lead Bill Skarsgård’s Joker-esque look
But sometimes audiences are left wondering if a remake of a classic actually brings anything to the audience. And the recently released remake of The Crow (1994) has viewers asking just that.

It’s a fine line between bringing something fresh to the big screen while not deviating so far from the original.
Audiences had high expectations for The Crow (2024), since the comic-to-screen production was marketed as an anti-Marvel movie. However, the film has been criticised for mirroring the aesthetics of another film too closely.
Comparisons were drawn between the remake’s star, Bill Skarsgård, and the star of the original, Brandon Lee – also the son of iconic martial artist and actor, Bruce Lee. Along with the dark supernatural superhero theme of the comic-book-turned-movie, the original film gained iconic cult status due to an unfortunate incident.

Brandon, who was making his acting debut playing the lead character Eric Draven, tragically died during production. The fact that the film was remade upset fans, who felt that leaving it alone would have been a better way to honour Brandon’s legacy.
Over the years, the film has seen three more instalments in the series and a television spin-off. There have been several attempts to remake this gothic cult classic as a featured film.
The Eric Draven character is a musician who, along with his fiancée – who will be played by musician Fka Twigs – was murdered. The character is later resurrected as The Crow to avenge his killers.
Skarsgård is no stranger to donning make-up and costume to get into character, as evidenced by his role as Pennywise; however, fans seem less pleased with his look for The Crow. Some questioned the make-up and costume choices, drawing a comparison between the character and Jared Leto’s Joker in The Suicide Squad.
When he assumed the persona of The Crow, Draven was drenched in heavy make-up and had an unruly head of wet hair. His heavily inked body and face lead to further comments that the character too closely resembled Leto’s Joker. Some felt the remake took the assignment of creating an undead character on screen too literally, and Skarsgård’s character took it one step too far from Lee’s original, who mainly wore black leather and white face make-up.

Fans are not the only ones shaken by the aesthetics of the remake. The original film’s director, Alex Proyas, was among the first to voice his criticism when the first stills from the film were shared on Vanity Fair’s Instagram.
In a post that is no longer available on Facebook, Proyas called the film insensitive to the late Brandon, and in another post described Skarsgård’s on-screen look as a bad hair day.
- Brandon Lee tragically died during production of the 1994 film, in his acting debut as lead character Eric Draven; Alex Proyas, the director of the original, recently criticised the remake
- The ‘anti-Marvel’ remake also stars Fka Twigs, but Skarsgård’s tattoos and heavy make-up for the role have drawn criticism from fans, who believe it parallels Jared Leto’s Joker character too closely
