His 20-year-old daughter previously spoke about dealing with rumours about her parents’ marriage and being a ‘nepo baby’ – but she’s busy charting her own course far from Hollywood’s limelight

Life as a celebrity kid might be privileged, but it can also be tricky to navigate – at least, that was the case for Lilly Luhrmann, daughter of Elvis director Baz Luhrmann, who is relentlessly hounded by speculation about his sexuality and marriage to Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin.

Last year, his daughter finally opened up about how the rumours surrounding her father affect her daily life. In an interview on the podcast Under the Gloss with Phoebe Burgess, Lilly recalled being followed to school by the paparazzi, and riding in a car while a radio show discussed rumours of her father’s sexuality.

Rather than feeling embarrassed though, she simply wondered, “Why are people talking about my dad? Why are they making fun?” She went on to recount having to justify why her parents slept separately to her schoolmates, saying, “They just have different sleeping schedules!” While she emphasised that these incidents didn’t affect her long-term, she did say she felt like “something was a bit amiss”.

More recently, Baz fuelled speculation about his marriage in a random street interview with TikTok creator Georgia Godworth. In the impromptu vox pop, the director enigmatically mentioned that he and his wife had “found our own really genuine and authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be”. He went on to mention bringing “other people into your arrangement” and believing that marriage requires “some degree of acceptance”.

Lilly told Phoebe Burgess on her podcast that she studies popular music, technology and digital media at The University of Queensland.

She also might be working at a nightclub. In March, she appeared in a Reel shared by Rattlesnake Nightclub about a staff party and has appeared in many more of the club’s social media content. Per its official website, Rattlesnake Nightclub is an “all-inclusive space” that aims to support local artists.
