He may be one half of beloved gay couple Cam and Mitch in the hit sitcom, but 53-year-old Stonestreet has created a modern family of his own with nurse Lindsay Schweitzer and her twin sons

Television icon Eric Stonestreet, best known for playing Cameron Tucker in Modern Family, is opening up like never before. On the podcast In Depth with Graham Bensinger, the two-time Emmy-winning actor talked candidly to the well-known entertainment reporter about his late father’s battle with cancer, the lost potential of a Modern Family spin-off, and the life he’s building with his wife-to-be, Lindsay Schweitzer.

Stonestreet recently reunited with his fellow Modern Family cast members for a WhatsApp commercial, and shared during the interview that it was “great to be back with everybody,” but also admitted, “it’s weird to get back in those clothes, just jump right back in”. The Kansas City native also emphasised that the trip to Hollywood made him realise that life in the Midwest comprised “authentic, real moments” whereas Tinseltown “highlights all the douchebaggery of our [entertainment] business”.

When asked about the fact that a Modern Family spin-off series starring Cam and Mitch (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson) had reportedly been rejected by the network, Stonestreet answered just as frankly. “I think it hurt Jesse and I’s feelings, I think it hurt Chris Lloyd [the producer]’s feelings,” he said – nevertheless still hinting at a possible Christmas special instead.

Since Modern Family ended, Stonestreet has been living with his fiancée, Lindsay Schweitzer, in Kansas City, where they’re building a home. The pair plan on hosting a wedding party and housewarming at the same time at the sprawling 31.5-hectare (78-acre) property.

So, just who is Lindsay Schweitzer, whom the Bad Teacher star spoke about in his interview, and calls “the best gift ever”?

Stonestreet first met Schweitzer – who is eight years his junior – at a Big Slick charity event for Children’s Mercy hospital in Kansas that he hosted with Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, Rob Riggle and others. She was working at the hospital as a paediatric nurse. When she saw him bonding with a non-verbal patient she had taken care of for over a decade, she thought it was “pretty awesome”.

Schweitzer sparked Stonestreet’s interest when he spotted her on X (formerly Twitter) defending him against hate comments for not taking a picture with the bride at a wedding party in his hotel. The chance meeting turned into a romance when he DMed her to ask about the patient he had met, to whom he had promised a Pandora subscription because the child was distressed about his music being interrupted by ads. One thing led to another and the two started dating. For the first three years, it was a long-distance relationship where she commuted to and from Los Angeles.
