Her husband John Griffin was the founder of major hedge fund Blue Ridge Capital, but Griffin carved her own niche in venture capital by focusing on female-led unicorn start-ups and building relationships

You might not know her name, but you know her work. Amy Griffin is kind of a big deal and now, the early-stage start-up investor – who focuses on female-led companies – is doing a deep-dive into how she found success in her new memoir, The Tell.

The world of venture capital is a very male-dominated one, but Griffin had carved a niche for herself as the founder and managing partner of G9 Ventures, a VC firm that dabbles in fashion, health, biotech and even Hollywood. Their mission? To “open doors and create partnerships” that “empower the consumer to live, look, and feel better”.

Her business-savvy and commitment to women’s empowerment has allowed her to grow powerful friendships with the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Spanx founder Sara Blakely.

Griffin opened her firm, G9 Ventures, in 2017, capitalising on her relationship with influential players in the world of fashion, politics, tech and Hollywood, per The Wall Street Journal. She deftly leveraged her relationships to pull off a slew of impressive moves, including negotiating Blackstone’s nearly US$900 million for long-time friend Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media group and shepherding dating app Bumble through its IPO (Griffin now sits on the Bumble board).
As an early investor, Griffin has also displayed a keen eye for spotting unicorn start-ups, jumping at the opportunity to invest in Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand Goop, supplement Athletic Greens, and Swiss sneaker company On Running.

She took a break from work for her family

In an interview for The Skimm, Griffin spoke about taking 10 years away from work to be a mum and raise her four children. She added that it was difficult to go back to the business world: “It’s really hard to step back in and say, ‘No, I’m going to do this. I’m gonna be really clear about my objectives. I’m gonna keep going back to my narrative and my story.’”
