I haven’t been a huge fan of handbags made by high jewellers until a couple of years ago, when I got my first Bulgari Serpenti cardholder. I’m still using it today because the snake head jewellery closure made with enamel and onyx is as good as new.
Pros: To celebrate the festive season, Bulgari has updated its top-seller, the Serpenti Forever flap cover bag with a special Quilted Scaglie motif. And if you are looking for a stylish spin on a classic style, you’d like to check this one out. The Serpenti bag closure also features matte enamel – unlike the more conventional shine enamel.
The bags all have a metal chain so you don’t want to put too much stuff in them, or else they will be too heavy on the shoulder. The chain, however, is nicely done. It’s smooth so your hair or furry sweaters won’t get caught in it. For the smaller version of the flap bag, you can also tuck the shoulder chain inside and use it as a clutch, which is probably how I’d wear it during the festive season.
Cons: As for the compartments, there aren’t many inside pockets in the smaller version but you’ll find pockets and compartments in the medium version. I like the small flap cover bag because it’s still quite spacious even without compartments. My iPhone fitted in perfectly and there’s still room for a lipstick, a small pouch and other essentials. My dancing shoes, though, probably won’t fit.
Compared to Bulgari’s high jewellery pieces, which could easily set you back a few millions, the handbag, is probably the most affordable among the offerings from the Italian brand. For the price, however, there are other options from more fashion brands.
Verdict: The bags are very nicely done in terms of craftsmanship, which justifies the price tag. Unlike metal bag closures from some fashion brands, the Bulgari Serpenti closure is highly durable because of the enamel and onyx material. It probably won’t be an entry-level purchase, but if you are looking for something special and timeless, then it’s got your name on it.
