One-minute bio: Tom Ford

Tom Ford

Tom Ford is more than the man who saved Italian brand Gucci from the verge of bankruptcy; he is the one who set the commercial prototype of the fashion brand’s global appeal.

Taking the helm of Gucci from 1990 to 2004, Ford transformed the brand from a dull label to a commercial powerhouse that was valued at US$10 billion upon his departure. Other names that have become the most sought-after brands under his rein are Saint Laurent and his eponymous label.

His designs are sexy, as in the velvet body-hugging dresses he designed for Gucci.

His clients include Hollywood stars as well as the world’s first ladies. In 2011, Michelle Obama wore a Tom Ford ivory floor-length evening gown to Buckingham Palace. His first directorial work, A Single Man , secured him an Oscar nomination.

Ford is the finest ambassador for the sex appeal his designs channel. Now 57, Ford stays perpetually chic in his favourite outfit: crisp white open-collar shirts and sharp dark suits.
