Legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld dies at 85

Chanel’s iconic creative director, who led the fashion house for more than three decades, passed away in Paris on February 19
Karl Lagerfeld has died in Paris at the age of 85.
“It is with deep sadness that the house of Chanel announces the passing of Karl Lagerfeld,” the brand announced in a statement. “A prolific creative mind with endless imagination, Karl Lagerfeld explored many artistic horizons, including photography and short films.
“The house of Chanel benefited from his talent for all the branding campaigns related to fashion since 1987. Finally, one cannot refer to Karl Lagerfeld without mentioning his innate sense of repartee and self-mockery.”
Virginie Viard, Lagerfeld’s long-term right-hand collaborator, will take over the creative direction for the collections “so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on”.
Born in Germany, Lagerfeld joined the French luxury maison Chanel in 1983, and led the house as creative director for more than 35 years.
He also served as creative director of the Italian leather goods brand Fendi, and spearheaded his eponymous label.
Lagerfeld was notably absent from Chanel’s couture 2019 fashion show – held at the Grand Palais every year – where he always made it a point to greet guests and fans.
