Take inspiration from the hottest looks in spring/summer 2019 fashion shows

The winds of change are in the hair – and skin and nails. The catwalks of spring/summer 2019 were all about fierce female empowerment and fresh, no-fuss femininity, including lead stylists’ choices on hair and make-up. We break down trends to copy from the catwalk, beauty products to pounce on and short cuts to styles that you can flaunt on the streets.

1. HAIR WE GO When it comes to hair, the catwalk consensus is to let the face breathe, unfettered by bangs and fringes. We saw it at Valentino’s couture show with cute pixie cuts, and Milan Fashion Week when hairstylist Guido Palau gave model Edie Campbell a rebellious boy-cut for Versace. Prada, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs and Balmain also sported androgynous styles.

Prabal Gurung and the Balmain Army signalled another hair trend: the “slick-back”, which is also appropriate for all lengths and layers.

For legendary hairstylist Sam McKnight, a wide-toothed comb distributing full volume mousse gave the Balmain army that “just-stepped-out-of-a-pool” look.

For Prabal Gurung, the “relaxed nomad” look offers something less “wet” and more wearable.

Hair accessories are the cherries on a stylista sundae. On the Prada catwalk, a stand-out Alice band popped in vibrant maraschino red with gold-toned studs.

Maria Grazia Chiuri kept it simple and neutral for Christian Dior with black and beige-toned hair bands, inspired by contemporary dancers.

2. LET’S GET LIP

Hellessey and Escada were both touting a signature red lip on minimalist make-up with their spring/summer collections. Rodarte make-up artist James Kaliardos used a red lip on the runway to complement and contrast broad sweeps of coloured eyeshadow. Think fuchsia pink or turquoise blue lids against a bright berry pout.
