Paying homage to the late designer, Poly Auction, the Hong Kong auction house has curated a Vintage Chanel Collection, which showcases historical jewellery pieces as well as important handbags seen on the runway of his themed fashion shows in recent years. The items will be auctioned next month.

Among the highlights of the sale include a 2016 Métiers d’Art Paris-Rome black and silver lucite, crystal and metal film camera evening bag – with an estimated value of up to HK$100,000 (US$12,740) – and an adorable doll purse from the Métiers d'Art Paris-Bombay pre-autumn 2012 collection.

Costume jewellery was something of a passion of the brand’s founder, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, and some pieces from Poly Auction’s collection sale predate Lagerfeld’s reign as Chanel’s creative director, which began in 1983.

Some jewellery pieces from the 1930s were created in response to Coco Chanel’s personal preferences.

Items from that period, included in the sale, include some of the statement necklaces – designs she was said to favour – and often doubled as belts.

Costume jewellery always played a part in Lagerfeld’s shows and continues to be an important part of Chanel’s identity today.

The Vintage Chanel Collection will go under the hammer on April 2 as part of Poly Auction’s “Nobel Handbags & Accessories” sale.

A selection of more than 200 Hermès bags featuring a large number in exotic leathers and luxury hardware will also be on sale at the Hong Kong Grand Hyatt event.
