STYLE Edit: Who is Zumi Rosow, the Gucci muse who inspired the Gucci Zumi bag?

Zumi Rosow a Los Angeles-based actress and experimental musician, with her namesake accessory on the runway during Gucci’s 2019 spring-summer show.

Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele gave us vintage eccentricity and youthful spirit in his 2019 spring-summer collection, most notably with the debut of the Gucci Zumi bag.

The collection was a tribute to Paris, where the Italian fashion house moved its ready-to-wear show to a nightclub in the Montmartre district of the city.

The Zumi Bag is named after Zumi Rosow, a Los Angeles-based actress and experimental musician. Rosow, who plays the saxophone in the Atlanta-based garage rock band Black Lips, may not seem like a typical sartorial muse. But Alessandro Michele is no typical designer.

Rosow had that Gucci look as she walked with her namesake accessory on the runway during the October show.

The Zumi bag is not as unconventional. The monogram hardware is actually a historical house motif that Michele uncovered in the Gucci archives. It features the familiar interlocking double-G with the classic metal horse bit.

The horse bit design is a classic piece of Gucci’s leather and saddle-making history, memorably seen on their iconic horsebit loafers.

The Zumi hardware mingles gold and silver coloured metals. To all those who believe mixing gold and silver is a strict no-no, the Zumi bag may remove this from the rule book once and for all.

The Zumi silhouettes suit different functionalities — from the top-handle to the mini-shoulder bag which can be worn either over the shoulder with the detachable Marina chain strap or as a clutch.

The boxy top-handle bag has a satisfying double lock that one must lift to open, as well as protective metal feet at the bottom. These small metal hardware details give the bag a sense of sturdiness and sophistication that has captured the attention of A-list celebrities.

At the Gucci autumn show this month, the bag was spotted on Chinese actress Ni Ni in the front row. Mary Queen of Scots actress Saoirse Ronan was also seen sporting a viridian green leather top-handle Zumi at the pre autumn show.

The bags are crafted in precious leathers, including lizard, ostrich, crocodile, python and elaphe snake.

The print turning most heads though is the Gucci strawberry on ivory leather. This cartoonish variant is for those who want to go all-out with the fruit of the season.
